  1. Approx. 50 lbs of live sand left over from setting up my tank. Fine, but not sugar sand. This stuff came from a really nice, healthy reef tank. 20.00

Also willing to trade for a power head.

  2. Arg! That plumbing was a bear to rig up. I don't have any valves. The return pump has 3/4" tubing, and the drain looks like a little over 1". I measured and it's a little over 5 feet of tubing the water has to go through. I have about 10 in of slack - would cutting that off help anything?

Thanks for the link. I checked it out, but I'm not sure what to do with the info on head loss - any suggestions on what kind of pump to get, and how powerful it should be? (GPH)

  3. Can anyone tell me why my overflow box won't fill? I have a box inside the tank with a drain that comes out the bottom, and my return pump in the sump that runs water to the top. The box will only hold about 2 in before it drains faster than the pump returns the water. Is my pump just too weak? It's a Quiet One, rated at 500 GPH.

  4. Has anyone had experience with an aquarium on laminate flooring? The only room big enough for my tank has the kind of laminate that snaps together. I'm not really concerned about the weight, just the possibility of water spilling. Does a certain amount of water get out of a tank no matter how careful you are? Should I put anything underneath the tank? I was thinking about getting a rug...

I was also wondering if the humidity would affect the wall behind the tank. It's painted wood paneling. Any thoughts?

  5. Evening all! I'm looking to start up my tank, and found someone needing to break theirs down. I'm thinking about taking all the water, rock, fish, and sand and putting it in my tank (which is dry right now). What do you guys think? Will everyone survive? Should I put some water in my tank and start cycling it, or just start things up when I get the new livestock? Are there any tips or tricks for moving this stuff?

A little info about my tank - I have compact florescents, a protein skimmer and eheim filter, and a sump. I attached a picture of what I'm looking at..... what do you guys think? Would I be better off starting from scratch with some bare live rock? This stuff is prettier .......... :)

  6. Well, I'm looking for live rock to start my tank up with and I went to see some today. I'm a little worried because in one of the tanks this person (not a member of the ARC) has, I noticed some aptaisia. He said the rock did not come out of that tank, and that aptaisia wasn't a really big deal because his shrimp eat it all the time. He showed me the tank the rock came out of, and I didn't see anything bad in there. Also, a bit of the live rock he's selling had some dark green slimy looking algae on it.

What do you guys think? Should I be worried? Also, the rock fills a 10 gallon tank right now, and he said it's a little over 100 lbs. Does this sound right? I have no idea how to tell how much this rock weighs! I need to make a decision quickly, and would really appreciate any suggestions.

  7. I'm new to the Austin Reef Club - a friend told me about it, and after seeing how nice and helpful everyone was I had to sign up! I had a 29 gal a few years ago, got rid of it because we moved, and I've regretted it ever since! I currently have an empty 65 gallon tank, and I'm ready to fill it. Looking forward to hearing about everyone's aquarium wisdom! smile.gif
