  1. My neurotic bird is actually a quaker... he's a good bird otherwise, but rather set in his ways, and a decent talker as well. He knows "step up", "dogs outside!" "what are you doing?", and a bunch of other things that are hard to understand. Our last lovebird was a surprisingly good mimic as well, but our current one doesn't seem to have much interest. Cockatoos are so sweet.. Barbara and I just birdsat for someone that has an umbrella 'too and an amazon.. the amazon was a bit skittish, but the 'too was so cute and cuddly.
  2. I know exactly what you mean.. plus one of my birds tries to kill himself if his schedule is too disrupted, so he'd have to be boarded.. then when he comes home we get to listen to all of the noises of the vet's office repeated over and over.
  3. An October trip would be nice as well. I used to go to Rockport over Thanksgiving weekend, and really enjoyed the area.. it was a little cool to go in the water, but it was great to be there when the tourist rush was gone.
  4. The one above and to the right looks like palau nepthea, but the one in the center... hmm..
  5. My guess would be bubble tip, since the mouth and tentacles look a lot like my bubble tip anemones, but I'm far from an expert.

That looks a lot like the galaxia I got from BillB. If that's what it is, it's a great looking, hardy coral, just keep an eye out for sweeper tentacles.
  7. This sounds like fun... I missed the last Port A collection trip on "the other forum," not sure when it is this year, but I'd rather go with ARC people, and the family loves the coast, so win-win. I'll run it by the wife and see what she thinks, but hopefully I can make this one.
  8. He's right, it definitely looks better in person.. mine is gorgeous, though at the moment it's hiding behind a rock of I'd post a photo.
  9. Thanks Cindy! My wife loves the tank, and it fits perfectly in the spot she picked out for it. She is already asking me when we can start swapping her creatures into it.
  10. I think my wife wants one of the tanks to upgrade one of hers, waiting to hear back on which one she's interested in.
  11. I've noticed that the smaller emeralds are better for bubble control than the big ones, and then they prefer the smaller bubbles. As Bill said, they're better to keep the bubbles in check rather than try to eradicate a large infestation, not only because of the spores (which can indeed be a problem) but also because of the damage that a large number of crabs can do once they run out of bubble algae (snacking on fish, decorative macro, hermits, etc)
  12. Thanks! The anemone is in the tank and looking good. I'll post pics later once it gets settled in.
  13. If you still have it, I want it! I tried to send you a pm, but it wouldn't go through. Jeremy 512-818-5076
  14. I had a couple of monti cap specimens (and a monti digitata frag) that did well in my 12g aquapod (similar design, but smaller). They didn't grow particularly quickly, but they kept decent color and didn't seem distressed. They promptly died when I transferred them into my 55g, apparently the halides were way more light than they were accustomed to even on the sandbed.
  15. I'm interested if this is still available.. looks like it will work much better than my homemade gatorade bottle reactor.
  16. +1 on taking it apart and putting it back together. I've had similar problems with my koralias, and it usually is the result of the propeller shaft being misaligned at one end, causing the magnet to bind.
  17. From the photos, this looks like the normal water change/waste expulsion cycle that anemones go through periodically (my BTA does it daily, my condylactis less often). Is this a new anemone?
  18. Interesting.. I don't think I've ever gone more than a day or so without reaching into the tank in some form.. I've been meaning to get some of those gloves as well (man, does that saltwater sting if you get it in a fresh cut), so it'll be worth seeing if I get similar results.
  19. I really like the pavona frag I got last time he listed them for sale.. it's growing surprisingly fast (way faster than the LPS i've been keeping up to this point), already starting to encrust the rock that I put the frag plug onto.
  20. Upgrading to electronic ballasts might be a good idea.. I know I've heard the name innova before, but I can't remember much else. I know that you can get an ARO electronic 150w ballast for around $100, which has a good reputation, but is still a good bit more than the $50 import ballast.
  21. I should add that if the ballast is indeed aging, you don't necessarily have to replace the entire unit. If you're reasonably skilled electrically you can replace the internal components for much less than the cost of replacing the ballast unit: hellolights has an m58 (250w) bare ballast for $70, and you can often find them cheaper than that at the habitat for humanity store downtown, though since those are used you run the risk of getting another loud one.
  22. Bill is likely right. As magnetic ballasts age the plates in the transformer start to get looser, causing a hum. To the best of my knowledge there really isn't a way to fix this, short of replacing the ballast (or at least the transformer), but it's often possible to find compatible ballasts for a reasonable cost, depending on wattage and such.
