  1. I've had my school of blue-green chromis for about 3 years. I occasionally try to add an additional one or two but always winnow back to the original three.

Last week I added 3 blue chromis from the Aquadome in the hopes that I can form a second school of 3, albeit slightly different.

  2. Technically, I believe we're supposed to refrain from promoting a non sponsored vendor. But I'd ask mFrame(mike) to be on the safe side.

Thanks for checking guys. As Brian mentioned, please adhere to forum rules regarding negative comments.

As for positive comments, we don't mind you talking about vendors, products, or services that you had a positive experience with. There are just a few things that we ask:

    • before you buy something online, why not give our local stores and online sponsors a chance? I know from personal experience that most of our sponsors would rather match a price than lose the sale altogether, and their sponsorships do benefit the club.
    • if you think a vendor would be a good club sponsor, please PM me or an ARC staff member
    • posts determined to be an attempt to "bypass" sponsor rules will be moderated. We don't want vendors, their employees, friends or family creating a "This store or product is GREAT!" posts instead of formalizing the relationship with the club and coming aboard as a sponsor.
    • we do want to continue to provide an incentive for sponsors to support the club
    • please do NOT re-list or review items or sellers from classified or auction sites (Craigslist, eBay, etc.) - it just clutters up the forums way too much.

The club also does provide a formal way for vendors to supply a demo or sample product for official review (see our Equipment Review section). If you have a product you would like to formally review then PM me or the staff, there are some disclosures that we have the vendor agree to (one of which is the possibility that the review could be negative).

  3. wish someone had told me about the ability to get corals before I donated to the Adopt a reef drive...smile.png ...I guess in a round about way I am ...thanks for the corals Sean

There's a standing offer to all members (not just Premium) to free corals when available. I try to bring frags to every meeting, and almost always have Devils Hand, GSP, Anthelia, or Xenia. If you're interested in any of the above let me know and we'll coordinate getting you some.

  4. The hobbies of reef-keeping and diving often go hand in hand. My personal interest in reef keeping was rekindled when my wife and I honeymooned in New Zealand and Australia. We were lucky enough to get to have our first scuba dive on the Great Barrier Reef. Upon returning home I just had to have a "piece of the reef" where I could see it every day. I'm sure I'm not the only one here with a similar love of the sea, so we've created a section here for you all to share your stories and questions.

Assuming there's interest, we might even end up with an annual ARC dive trip. Let me know what you think, and remember, pictures of your dives are greatly appreciated!

  5. Thanks to everyone who showed up, and thanks to Jake and the gang at River City Aquatics for hosting and providing the pico aquarium that was won by Brian Srock as part of our Christmas food drive!

The food drive netted two large boxes of canned food for the Capital Area Food Bank.

Happy Holidays, everyone! Be safe, make sure you have someone watching your tank while you travel, and make it home safe so that we can see you at the January meeting!

  6. Great idea!

We should totally incorporate this into our December meeting. Bring something for donation to a charity and bring a small frag as a freebie for anyone who wants it. I'm sure we'll get a pretty good new members turnout with that for that meeting.

    -Ty

You missed the meeting this past Saturday?!? Booooo!

I still like the idea of sharing corals though. The idea was also mentioned that we could create a "frag pack" of the corals, and people picking up packs could give a $5 donation to the Nature Conservancy Adopt-A-Reef drive. I'm open to whatever the club members want to do.

I've got plenty of Devils Hand leathers and pieces of Anthelia to contribute to the pack.

  7. So.... I do have a pistol shrimp, or at least I added one, I have not seen him pretty much since the day after I added it. It was a very small one that was paired with a watchman goby. When I say small I'd say about 1/4". That being said, I have not heard any clicking, given 3/4" glass in 92 gallons of water, and that small a shrimp would I even hear it? Better question is; would that shrimp be my killer, either now or in the future? I was under the impression that the Tiger Snapping Shrimp as shown here: http://www.liveaquaria.com/product/prod_display.cfm?c=497+525+1148&pcatid=1148 was a safe addition to my tank.

I would assume the shrimp is alive and still in the tank. Within two weeks it should have dug its tunnels and started staking out the entrances to "hunt". You'll definitely be able to hear it assuming it's still alive, I've had several and they've all been as loud as someone snapping their fingers. They're primarily nocturnal, so you'll most often hear them at night. And yes, they should be a safe addition to your tank.

  8. **Could not figure out how to update my original post with the pics. If it is possible, please let me know**

With that said, here is a pic of the tank 3 days in:

The little piece of rock sitting to the top right is being seeded for a 2G tank sitting next to this one:p

  9. I wouldn't fill the gap with anything. Instead, I would shim the foot of the stand in that back corner. The weight of the tank/water will push down on the stand, so I believe what you want to do is "raise the stand to meet the tank" rather than support just the tank corner. With that amount of gap I think the tank will flex when full, which isn't really what you want it to do.

The other option is putting a piece of foam under the entire length of the tank. You can use wall insulation from Lowes or Home Depot (it comes in sheets) to accomplish that.

    Happy Holidays Everyone!

  11. The typical spectrum advertised for bulbs are 10k, 14k, and 20k.

I still have my 48" fixture over my new tank running (4)54w T5 actinic and (2)250w metal halide (plusrite 20k bulbs) if you would like to do some comparison shots.

  12. all petco's...thye are kept in the tanks with the fish and they are ...meh

The Petco in Sunset Valley (just south of Ben White on Brodie) has a dedicated frag tank. I talked to the manager there for a while and was told that due to high sales in that store as well as persistent staff members, they were allowed to set up the dedicated frag tank as a proof of concept for the other stores. For a chain they are trying really hard to be a little different and to foster the hobby. Hat's off to them.

  13. If you guys can settle on a specific tank, I bet I can arrange a discounted group-buy through one of our sponsors. If you all have the exact same setup then the contest will truly be about design and livestock choices.

Let me know if you want to pursue this.
