  1. Here is what I like to do. I prepare some dry rock rubble for frag mounting, large enough pieces that can't be knocked around. I cut the frag about 1/4" above the plug, of course this is for SPS, and mount the frag to the rock with some super glue. I then place the frag into the tank at a desired location. I then place the plug in my tank somewhere to quickly heal and grow out. I then offer it up for free, trade or sale depending upon what it cost me originally. I usually can get rid of them within 2 weeks. That way I get a nice piece and then I can help out another reefer for next to nothing.

I agree with vwmike great thinking caferacermike.

Anyone have something cool like this for other corals?

  2. Ok, everyone is begging me to frag my yellow zoas. I decided to have some fun with this.

So, guess the next day it rains (EXACTLY) and if you win, I'll frag the yellow zoas.

    Rules:

    1. One entry (day guessed) per user

    2. Don't go registering a bunch of new screen names to try to stuff the ballot. Scouts honor on this one!

    3. You have to answer the DAY and MONTH correctly.

    4. Contest will end the next day it rains...i.e...I walk outside of my house and the road is wet with rain.

Hmmm....a wet road you say :) . So you don't actually have to see the "rain"....

  3. When I got my wrasse and was doing research on the different kinds, I seem to remember some do well with other wrasses and some do not. Reef Aquarium Fishes by Scott Mitchell is a great book to consult.

  4. This is what I have on my 24G right now. It works very well with the exception of an issue with micro-bubbles that is just unavaoidable with a gravity fed system. I am mitigating this with the use of a sponge filter. I would like to do this on my new setup but it just won't work with the space I have. There would also be the issue of keeping 150G tub with lots of sand and live rock 6' up in the air.

Yeah, the 150G tub that high up in the air was the crazy part :D.

  5. Just a thought may sound a little crazy or maybe not...You could put the sump/fuge higher than the tank. Then have your pump pull water from your tank to the sump and let gravity send water from your sump back in the tank. There would be no pumps to kill pods on there way back to the main tank. I can think of a couple ways to hide the pump in this scenario.

  6. Way to go Jake. The numbering system was a huge improvement. I think people were a little frustrated for the last one, but this one was smooth and very organized. It made a lot of sense to do it with a ticketing system.

I love the spotted jawfish and my girlfriend loves the ricordea. Great to stock up on some kent products also.

Food was fantastic. What were the roast beef filled sandwiches called? They were great, maybe a new side business for you :(.

  7. I don't have experience with central overflow, but can offer a solution for your wires.

If you want to avoid having wires on the side of your tank and can spend a little more $$ up front there is another solution you might consider. You can have an extra hole drilled to run the wires to your lights/canopy. You would then use something like pvc or something more aesthetically pleasing to run the wires through. The pipe would ideally be minimum of 2~3 inches above the water line. The wires have minimal contact with saltwater and are hidden. I would highly adivse a drip loop and GCFI outlet as evaporated water could drip down the cords. Assuming the stand this is where timers/surge protectors will be.

I initially though about going this route and was talking with Jake about doing this, but then had some recession issues and decided to go a cheaper way. You can get an idea of what this might look at if you go to RCA. They have a fresh water tank to the right when you walk in with PVC pipe coming up from the bottom. Unless you look for them you don't really notice the PVC.

  8. I have a nice healthy batch of Red Purple eaters. I just got them a few weeks back but am seeing some new buds coming out and the RPE have completely encrusted the disc they are on.

So, my **** stupid clowns, bob and bobbette, have decided to try to host in it. Overall I'm not too worried about the RPE but the clowns are taking the tentacle's of the skirts into thier mouths like you would a normal 'nem. Are my Clowns trying to stupidly commit suicide here? There is a nice rose 'nem about 5" away from the paly's that is about the same size as the paly colony. Is there any way to get them to finally see the nem and start hosting in that?

If you have a second tank try moving the palys there. I changed tanks and moved my anemone, which my clowns love, they moved over to some frogspawn. The only thing is once they were back in the same tank with the anemone, they wen right back to it. Which they might do in your case and go back to the palys.

  9. Welcome!

Be sure to make it to River City Aquatics this Saturday for a blow out sale. It'll be a great time to stock up on some basics to get ya going.

Besides, a lot of us will be there. I think I'll bring 1 can of Lone Star for all ARC folks who make it out.

    Hi Daisy and Welcome!!!

Robb makes a great point, with the discounts River City is offering on Saturday it would be great for someone getting back in the hobby. I'd recommend going by River City on Thursday or Friday and get a preview of the store. It is going to be a bit crazy on Saturday during the sale.

  10. That sounds really cool with the lightening. I think I remember now seeing photos Ace took with the straight sunlight, and then with the Actinics on. It looked pretty good. BTW, did he stop growing SPS? I had heard a rumor about that. I would love to have the solar tubes too, unfortunately the location of my tank and the way the has is built, it won't ever happen for the display tank.

    Stephen

ACE had SPS when I was there. The colonies he had were pretty big. He had a good variety besides sps as well. I think he had a few anemones, zoanthids, and some LPS. I mainly wanted to check out his tank and get some ideas from him as I was thinking of going the solor tube route. I think he documented the growth rates of some of his corals on MAAST. He took a lot of pics including some of his tank with just the moonlight.

  11. I followed Mikes thread a while back to the same place on MAAST. I didn't realize he finished the tank. I would really like to see that.

Stephen, I went to SA and got to check out Ace's setup with the solar tubes about 3 months ago. It was pretty nice and he had some ridiculous growth from his corals with just the sun light. He had some actinic light to add some blue into the tank, other than those it was 100% sunlight. He said it was awesome when there were thunderstorms. The tank would light up with each flash of lightning.

  12. I think I have exhausted all attempts with the tweezers anyways! I'm glad you told me about the speading, so now I'll know to really look out. I just tried about 15 minutes ago with my new 12" long tweezers and it didn't work... this is a small one. This is the only brown aiptsia I've found so far. I'm going to try the lemon juice now, see if that works until I can get the aiptasia-X. Do I need to inject the anemone with the juice or just get to eat it by squirting some near it?

I got rid of green anemone already.

You need to inject the lemon juice with a syringe in the base of the anemone. It is a little tricky at first as they will shrink away from the syringe and the lemon juice. I belive they shrink away from the lemon juice on their own because of the acid. I didn't know where to get syringes, so I went by the pharmacy at Walmart. I don't know much about needles so I explained my needs to the pharmacist. After a puzzled look, they suggested I use needles for diabetics as they are very thin. I think it was about $1.50 for a bag of 10. You can probably get them at any pharmacy.

I read this method in an online thread a while back. It worked for me (I had 3 big aiptasia in a 24 gallon tank). I remeber in the thread there was some concern for the extra acid in the tank, but since you are still cycling it shouldn't matter much at all. If someone else is reading this and wants to try it, don't go crazy with the lemon juice and it should be fine. And as always if you do go crazy, do a water change to dilute the acid.

  13. Shawn,

Becareful with the tweezer method of removing aiptasi. Tearing aiptasia has been know to promote it spreading. I'd use something like aiptasi-X or lemon juice. Pepermint shrimp are also a great way to go, but I've only had luck with them eating small ones.

  14. The plan is to ship on Wednesday, for delivery on Thursday. Probably just before noon like last time.

Is the order getting here tomorrow? John sent me a confirmation email for my order, but I can not track the order status. My login does not work for this order. I think since this is a group order only one of us can login and track it, probably the originator of the order.

The order number John sent me is 3049.
