look at the 6045 toward the bottom of the page
http://www.myreefcreations.com/tunze.htm
two of these might be really nice on a 55g.
i cant tell you how much i like the 6080 on my 55 though, and even though it is only one powerhead it creates currents in all directions. you may come check it out is you are interested. the flow is really unlike any other powerheads.
-
do check out the nano streams, they are very cool looking and they are Tunze, and they are reasonably priced. I think you can achieve better flow, possibly with less cost.
-
depends on what you are keeping too. i keep everything. some might say i am over'flowing'. the fish behave normally though, they even seem to enjoy playing in the currents and i suspect it may make them stronger. at some point this much flow behaves diffently than streams of water. it is more like walls of movement pushing back and forth and swirling.
tunze 6080 (2250gph)
mag 9.5 return (950 probably adding 700 to the tank)
4 MJ1200s on alternating cycles (600 at any moment)
i could get by without the MJs entirely but i use them behind the rock mostly, and to confuse the 6080 current a little.
if you are looking to add more buy the tunze 6080 you wont regret it. or better yet the 6100 if you want to upgrade tank size and use a controller in the future.

what size tank?
i have been surprised every time that i add flow by just how much current the fish will tolerate. i am running 3500 gph in a 55g right now and i think that is just about enough. i have never experienced a cyano problem in this tank though i have seen it in our smaller seahorse tank that has considerably less flow.
-
IME flow is most critical in eliminating cyano as well as reduced nutrient.

the short time out of water should not harm the bacteria

if you are moving a tank or setting up a new tank and transferring stock you may avoid a new cycle by using the mature sand, rock, and water. as Gabe said though, the water is the least important component. the rock and sand contain the microbial populations that have grown to appropriate sizes to consume the wastes in the tank. if you are transferring to a larger tank you may be adding more live rock. make sure the live rock is fully cured or you will start another small (or large) cycle. for the sand, rinse it well with RO or salt water to remove the detritus that has been trapped deep within. the bacterial populations will have to reestablish a balance in the new system so go easy on feedings and adding more live stock until you are sure that your parameters are stable. the smaller the change in size the less likely you will see any cycle as the bacterial populations do increase very rapidly. if the new tank is a very large one i would be more cautious and let the new tank run for a week or longer - until there is no sign of AM and Nitrite. g'luck.

i'll do it. where are you moving to? south austin?

thanks for the response randy. he passed away today. i am clueless as to what may have happened though. he was healthy one day, blind the next, and dead one day later. has anyone ever had that happen before?
-
Any suggestions on how to feed a blind fish? My mandarin seems to have lost its sight. Otherwise healthy and was eating mysis. He is in a seahorse tank and has little competition at feeding time.

i have some spare parts michael

the aragonite should bubble when exposed to a weak acid like vinegar (if you get an opportunity to test it. the silicon sand will not react to vinegar.
-
did i miss it somewhere?....what is your nitrate level?
-
do you have any nitrate? if it is above undetectable a new skimmer or less feeding may remedy your problem. a phosphate reactor may help too. but if it is not really bad then it may just be a cyclical bloom and will recede on its on.
oh and lights, did you change bulbs or increase your photo period?
-
i would be happy to share the carpets. i must have misunderstood you mike. perhaps i thought you were talking about the acans that were sold. i will place some rubble up against these to see if i can catch some moving. i will let you both know when they do.
-
that's too cool. great idea.
-
i think you would be better off with this one.
http://www.petstore.com/ps_ViewItem-Search...-Euro_Reef.html
the rs80 is 22" tall and this one is 20" tall. I believe EuroReefs are designed for zero clearance. not positive though
check on the operating depth too. i cannot remember how deep we set your sump level but i believe you may have to raise the skimmer a couple of inches.

plus the added heat that you have to remove from the house and/or tank. still it doesnt amount to much.
-
If there really must be a next step you should consider SE and VHO actinics.
uhhhhh, seriously happy3.gif
