  1. I have 2 T5s in my current light rack, but the new one I'm building I will have 4 VHOs. From what I have been able to determine, although the T5s are more efficient, you can get more power with the VHOs, hence my decision to change to them.

  2. Hydro,

Without asking you to repeat anything you might have already talked about on other threads, can you point me to any of your threads or other info that talks about using water cooling for MHs? I currently have 2x400W MHs and am building a new light rack that will have 3x400W MHs (plus 4X140W VHOs) and would be very interested in how I might could use water cooling to reduce heat and possibly save electricity.

  3. Well, here is my take on this. None of us like to pay the sometimes ridiculous prices we pay for reef stuff. However, if everyone started buying chinese (or whatever country) knockoffs, i.e. probably stolen and copied technology, then don't complain when companies like Euro-Reef, Deltec, Tunze, and others stop developing the better technologies because everyone opts to buy the cheap knockoffs and copied (read stolen) designs they have invested in developing.

  4. Sorry to be late to the game Clint. That is absolutely gorgeous!!! Please put me on your frag list as well. I didn't realize Matt had gotten such nice SPS in. I guess I need to drive out to Taylor.

BTW, probably a little too early for a definite vote on the Pohl's Xtra Special, but so far the results of dosing this and the Pohl's Xtra every other day seem to be good.

  5. The normal parameter for Nitrates for corals is less than 10. Also be aware that anything you use (sulphur or pellets) is going to take a while to start working. If it was me and I was starting a new tank, I would have whatever equipment I was going to use ready, however I would not put it online until I saw Nitrates at around 5 ppm or so.

    Again, that's just me.

  6. Also, generally you will still need to use GFO for Phosphates. The pellets (and as my understanding even straight vodka dosing) does not use up all the Phosphates because of the chemical reactions involved. These mainly work for Nitrates, and a little for Phospahtes.

  7. This is interesting. As a user of NP pellets, these look like about $20 less per 500 ml ($40 less on the 1000 ml size) than the NP pellets. John at Kingfish told me also that Vertex (I think I have that right) are also coming out with their version of the product, which Kingfish will be able to get.

  8. If you don't have a Nitrate issue, then a very accurate kit is probably not needed. I was having a Nitrate issue, and wanted a kit that would tell me if the steps I was taking were working or not. Now that I have the issue under control, I only test every couple of weeks instead of every week, and as long as it stays 1 ppm or under, I don't get concerned.

  9. Lamotte uses a "look through" device to read the color. At the very lower ranges (0.25, 0.5, 1.0) its a little hard to read the difference, but at the mid and higher ranges its very clear. Thankfully, recently I'm having to decide if its reading 0.25 ppm or 0.5 ppm, so its not a big deal.

I have a Deltec kit I use of Phosphates. It's the only one for PO4 I've been able to read well consistently.

  10. I have used Elos for Nitrate (and these are generally my preferred test kits on most everything), however I am now using a Lamotte test kit for Nitrate and now swear by it. I got mine from Marine Depot - I don't think you can get them locally. It is more expensive (around $65) but it is accurate and fairly easy to perform.

  11. Don't know how much I can contribute on the time thing, but I would certainly like fresh phyto, roti's, and pods (especially pods), so I can definitely contribute money to the project for the order to get it set up.

    Let me know.

  12. The 5 yr thing sounds like another one of those urban legends (or should I say reef legends) without a shred of scientific fact. Dale has been running 400's for a long time, as I have for for almost 3 yrs. I plan to continnue as long as I can afford my electric bill. If you decide to change over, let me know. I might be interested in the bulbs and ballasts.
