  1. The build thread I made didn't see much traffic, so I decided to post here some new additions to the tank.

  2. Title says it all. I moved my nano power head from one side of the tank to the other and all of the fish have been out of sight, hiding in the rocks since the change.

Did a significant water change earlier as well.

It worried me that all the fish went into hiding, so I did a quick test...

Ammonia, nitrite and nitrate are all at 0

    Ph is 8.0

    SG is at 1.023

Is it normal for fish to hide after a change in current like this?

Find out what is keeping your ph so low.

I thought Ph at 8 is ok? From what I have learned, the tank will fluctuate between 7.9-8.4 throughout the day. Please correct if that is wrong.

The test was also taken in the evening and about 1.5 hrs after water change if that matters.

  4. I am back for round two!

I didn't have my 55 gallon up long enough to start a build thread before I lost it. So, I figured I would try to get this one up sooner than later.

    REEF TANK 2.0

So, thanks to Ashley (prettyfishy76) for giving me the great deal on the setup!!!! It was great to find such a good deal to help get me started again.

I was too excited to get it home and setup, that I completely spaced on taking pictures during that process. So, the first pics I got are going to start when It was already up and running. My bad.

Here it is all setup with the stock 150w MH

    ChthWds.jpg

That was just too white in my opinion. Especially after coming from the AI Sol Blue on the last tank.

So I upgraded to the Kessil A150w.

    Uy4XI8H.jpg

Immediately blown away! Amazing shimmer, color and everything that everyone else says about it.

But soon after the cycle completed and I started stocking, I started regretting the Kessil and wished I had something with more customization. Don't get me wrong, the Kessil looked awesome. But when I had the Sol, I liked the fact that sunrise/sunset had more blue and showed off the corals more. And during the day, it was more white which really made the colors of the fish pop like crazy. Plus the added weather features made it really cool.

To achieve this and keep the Kessil, I would have to rig up the MH as well. And I did not want to ruin the sleek look of the Solana. So, while waiting it out and trying to come up with some sort of plan to not lose money and to get the light spectrum I wanted, I figured I would add some livestock.

    Meet,

    Hector the goby

    Chuck the Chalk Bass

    myc1S7v.jpg

and the teal Palys and Green Fungia Plate thanks Ty!

    Rw1bi1o.jpg

But it was just too blue.

Had to change it. I missed the AI Sol too much. The guys at Aquatek were awesome and gave me a full return on the Kessil and gooseneck mount I bought, and I ended up walking out with a new AI Vega Color!

This was right out of the box all levels at 80%

    0Q4QQQU.jpg

Now I have the customization back and can set all the timers like before.

And of course I couldn't get home and setup a new light without having something pretty to put under it, right?!

    Neon Torch

    lfcMREZ.jpg

    Acro (can't remember the name)

    XuI9JaS.jpg

    Augustus the Candy Hog

    yb5ra0i.jpg

Red Monti cap thanks Ty! Didn't have any other pics of it

    HLtCKar.jpg

    Here is lunar FTS

    N1Oc9v5.jpg

and the toch and acro with daylight right out of the box. I love how the green looks even with the white light!

Well, that is how it sits right now. As more additions come, I will try and take more pics to keep this thread updated.

  5. So I was doing some reading and came across this interesting write up on the differences in toxicity levels of nitrite between fresh and saltwater systems.

From their testing, it seems marine and reef habitats aren't nearly as susceptible to nitrite poisoning as a freshwater habitat. They seemed to add nitrite directly to the test water, rather than letting a spike in ammonia happen first to lead to the spike of nitrite. I assume this means that if nitrite rose to a toxic level, then the ammonia would have had to have been higher than toxic way before hand. And if we do our job and keep ammonia undetectable, then nitrite should not be a worry.

Is this correct? What opinion do you all have on this subject? I found it interesting.

  6. Hi all!

I know it's been a while since I have been on to update or even thank everyone that helped out in my recent ordeal.

First and foremost, Thank you, thank you, thank you to everyone who contributed to the cause. It made a huge deal of help in getting things taken care of. You all have no idea how good it feels to receive help like that!!!! Truly amazing. I am sorry it has taken this long to get back to you all. Please do not think I forgot about y'all!

    Now, on to the update...

I'm on my own now, sad to say. But things happen for a reason I guess and negativity will not help progress.

I have finally gotten settled in a new house with a really good friend of mine. Luckily he had an extra bedroom in a duplex and moving was quite simple. Now that I am settled in and things are starting to look up, I figured it is time to get back on the swing of things with the tank.

A buddy of mine has a 40 gallon that is sitting in house empty that he said I can have for my first starter tank getting back into it. So, I think I am going to start there and actually go the drilled overflow and sump method. Last time, on the 55 gallon, the HOB sump/fuge was a pain lol.

I want to try a different approach this time around and concentrate more on coral than fish. Of course I will have a few fish for some movement, But I want my main focus to be growing beautiful corals.

Tax return should be coming in soon to help get the ball rolling. I can't wait to get back into it. I will keep everyone posted along the way with a build thread for progress. Good to be back!

  7. Ok, so I have details on the golf tournament if any of you are interested.

It will be at Riverplace Golf Club on the 28th, which is the last Monday of January. Starting 10:30-11am. $80 per person. That covers, green fee/cart/range use, light lunch before and after the round and a portion of proceeds to the charity to help us rebuild. Riverplace is normally closed on Mondays and usually a little more than $80 to play there as a guest. So, if anyone is interested, let me know. I'm not sure how many of you might be into golf, just thought I would post info here as well.

Thanks again for everything RCA has been able to help with!

  8. wow! This is awesome!!!!!! Thank you all. I can't say it enough,

I will post more info on the golf tournament when it is all setup. I am still waiting on some details and emails back from a friend of mine. So far, I am pretty sure it will be at Riverplace Golf course on Monday 28th. If anything else changes, I will post here to update. Thanks again everyone!

  9. As of now, Serenity is good I believe. She has gotten more toys and clothes than we know what to do with. Mine and Zoey's families were great to us for Christmas covering clothes and some other necessities for the new place. So anything else being donated, we will look over and if it cannot be of use to us, it will go to the shelter with other things we have been taking up there. Thanks again to everyone for the help and response this has brought out. You all have no idea what it feels like to receive such love and support from a group of people whom most you have not met. It makes this whole situation much easier to deal with.

  10. Hey everyone! Sorry I have been out of touch the past few days. We have a lot going on. We are still looking for a storage unit. The only days I have been able to look, people are closed/off for holidays. As of now, we cannot hold anything else where we are staying. There just isn't anymore room. I appreciate all the help everyone is offering.

Robb, it would be great to have a hand at some of the drives. My car is also really small, so I can't fit much in it.

  11. Donations through the club so far total $160, so please continue to keep Klayton and his girls in your thoughts.

What ages and sizes are your girls? I have 2 girls and would love to donate good clothes if the sizes match up.

I have a complete toddler bed, with bedding (Tinkerbelle) - if you want. Also I have 4t clothes that I just removed from my daughters room. Let me know if you would like that also. Nwehrman@centurytel(dot)net Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD

This is amazing!!! Thank you all for being so generous! It truly means the world and makes it so much easier to stay positive through this whole situation.

Serenity is a 3t and 6 shoe. The tinkerbell bed would make her day. Tinkerbell is one of favs and she is in need of a bed.

  12. Thank you so much Robb for putting this together. And thank you to all the people that have responded to Robb or sent PMs my way. We are extremely grateful to receive as much help from people that we don't even really know or have maybe never met. I posted a thread here yesterday, but did not want to make it out as a charity thread. Being right at Christmas time, I knew it would be tough for anyone to donate or contribute much. It is also kind of a weird place to be asking people that you have never met for help or donations. I have never really been the kind of person to ask for hand outs and this is a tough thing to go through. I am just trying to stay strong and positive and take care of my girls. Again, thank you to all that have responded, it means more than I can describe. anything helps and it means the world to know there are people out there willing to help out so much. Thanks again!

  13. So, my wanting to upgrade has now turned into a forced restart. Last Thursday at 1:30am my apartment building caught fire. It was the International Residence complex off of Lakecreek & 183. I don't know if any of you heard about this or saw it on the news. I lived in building 13 which was where it started. I believe it started in the apt directly across the wall from us. Our building was one of three to burn entirely to the ground, Nothing salvageable. Not even close. And my reef tank was included in that unfortunately. I only had the tank up and running about two months or so. Now it is all gone. Not only just the tank. We were lucky enough to get out safely with only the clothes that we were able to throw on before evacuating the building. I tried to sign on and post this earlier, but we have had a lot to deal with. Now that Christmas is over and things are settling down, I have a little more time to send out emails and make some posts about the events that took place.

If anyone knows of any spare parts or equipment that can be donated to starting over, I would be forever grateful. It is time to start saving up for a new place to live and rebuilding and replacing as much as we can that was lost.

Thanks in advance for any help that anyone can offer.

  14. Nice thanks. It says score! So I guess they are both good things. I read some other stuff on those spiorbid worms and everyone says they are a sign of a healthy maturing tank. So that makes me happy. Looks like I am doing things the right way. I love finding out that new life is good life!
