You can learn a lot here, some of it what to do, some of it what NOT to do
Welcome

If you are looking for LR, try Prof(great prices, nice stuff),Fishy Business(really good prices, really nice stuff), River City has very good prices, but usually requires curing first, Aquadome has higher prices, but this batch they have now has some really nice shapes, and then Aquatek has interesting stuff, but the prices are quite a bit higher than the others(on their website is a coupon for $1/lb, but they start at 8/lb).
No bashing any of these, I have rock from each of them, some more than others.
Good luck

Along these lines, has anyone seen/have a thermometer that has a warning setting?
-
Should be a nice height for viewing, I look forard to seeing the pics with the tank on it.

I wouldn't mind a piece of it, I don't have anything to trade as of right now because I am restarting my reef. Are you going to the meeting this weekend?
Wifey says, "If we get the house ready for the in-laws this weekend, I can go."
If not, I will gladly share with a fellow vet. Did you read up on it?

Add in the next question, if sand which size? Special seafloor grade or sugar or another size. I'm not sure which is more gooder, could be a mix is bestest.

My SW plant tank has too much Grape Caulerpa in it. Anyone want a sprig of it? Some fish eat it in small amounts, can be a nuisance or it can be good for removing Nitrate. It is pretty and it tends to help hide/feed pods. Read up on it before putting in your tank. Looks nice when trimmed.
If anyone wants to trade another macro, I would love to swap, but it isn't necessary.

Chris, Seriously try the Marine SAT(TLC) it in a live bacteria that basically takes the place of what the bubble algae is growing from in the rock. It eats what the bubble algae is growing from therefore reducing them. Within 1 month with my old take being what i would say infested with them they were gone GONE!!!! i put 2 bottles in at one time.(72 gal bowfrnt) Make sure and get the one for saltwater
Does it affect other "good" algae?

Thanks for the suggestion,I will pick some up next payday! BTW-does size matter? they are for a 55g.

I have been getting green bubble algae in my tank. I was able to pull out the live rock and gently brush it off, then hit the area with boiling wate. But it seems it never goes away. Is there an animal that eats it? My snails won't touch it.
Thanks,
Dan

Austin Reef Club -> Gallery -> Viewing image -> Small aragocrete
I uploaded 3 images to the gallery. Very porous, I want to make up some bigger pieces, but this was just to see if it would work at all. I have plenty of concrete, and some biodegradable packing peanuts to try next, along with some cool disk shaped "things" I created from mushed corn. I also I want to try adding some black plastic shavings(ever notice how the black plastic in your tank gets coraline ultra fast?
Lots to try, hoping to have time over the Christmas break!

Along this line,
has anyone set up a small tank in series with a large tank (like some people do with a sump) so they can keep exotic/aggressive animals, but have the full volume to minimize the temp/water quality changes. Just curious.

Best wishes with raising the berghia. I think they are beautiful critters. Partner's pet shop in Round Rock had a small live rock with about 10 on it last time I was there. Maybe they'd let you borrow it.

First comment didn't seem to take, so here it is again:
a 55 Gallon aquarium not including its own weight is 440 lbs (55*8lbs/gallon saltwater), add in 50lbs of live rock, 40 lbs of live sand. It needs an extremely sturdy stand to sit atop. Kitchen cabinets are usually pressboard and ill suited to carrying the weight of a full tank. Just my two cents.
-
Couldn't you just break apart the aiptasia? Afterall there is a reason they are called glass anemones. Feed em up good before you cut them and they should reproduce nicely.
-
55gallons times 8-8.5 pounds per gallon (min 440lbs) is probably more than your cabinets can handle. Add in 40 lbs of live sand, another 50lbs of live rock. If your cabinets are pretty, you may benefit from building a skeleton of 2x6's with good cross braces. You cannot over-build a stand. Add in some pink foam insulation, the firm stuff not fiberglass rolls, to account for any unevenness.
Hope this helps you.

I rearranged my live rock this AM. Flipped the rock with mushrooms flat and raised it 6-8 inches. They seem to be more spread open than they were. Do I need to feed them? The renegade has floated to the back of my tank, not sure if I can get it out with powerhead or not, can't reach via net.
Even I do get it, how can I convince it to stay put?
Can someone direct me to a good source for mushroom information?

I made up a few rocks of aragocrete a few weeks back that have been pH aging in rainwater(when we get it) or tap water. Finally starting to see the pH drop to under 9. Hoping to have it ready to cure with natural live rock by Christmas.
Anybody else ever work with it?
-
Funny how those sayings remind me of high school.
Anyway, my mushroom popped off the rock it was on. Since I've never had mushrooms before, am I doing something wrong in their care?
Do I need to feed them or give them better light? I have a newer 10K white and 5k act.
-
Just curious, still got it? If I get a bonus this year...
-
Welcome fellow new Pf'villian
Hope to see you around the lake!

Guess that's not too witty a title, but that's me. I set up my first saltwater tank in '86 and lost it all in '91 during the ice storm.
After a few years off(just a few, hmmm) I got back into the hobby with my 55G and man have things changed.
Just hoping to trade ideas and learn a little from everyone.
