  1. That set up is so amazing!! I want it.:D

No, no, no, it isn't I WANT it, it's I'm gonna do that. Once the student loans are paid off, I wuz gonna get a Z28, but I think this would be a more appropriate mid life crisis toy!

I can't even imagine the setting up of this display. I think I'll read it again. :(

  2. "Luke, you must learn patience", line from some movie I saw as a kid.

Anyhow, good advice, I let him be and wow, y'all were right!

Since I got rid of the black crab the hermits have wondered the tank, but I only see them at lights out.

Thanks again for reminding me that animals are smarter than I am and that I should just accept that fact.

    :D

  3. He may be a nice little fellow for someone's tank, but since I've taken him out of mine I haven't lost any more hermits.

  4. Is there a way we can get a grant to collect as many species of corals and other critters/algae etc (even ugly ones) that are in the path of the Gulf's oil slick.

Then captive breed them like Austin aqua farms does? After the slick is cleaned up, repopulate it with the captive grown corals to reseed the reef.

Should have enough knowledgeable people on this website to have some success.

Anyone have any ideas on the matter?

  5. Firefish showed up again (i saw a post on how they can hide for weeks).

I looked up the crab on Chuck's Addiction(and several other sites), it does look more like the Gorilla crab, but hard to tell for sure. Either way, I haven't lost any more hermits since he was removed.

Thanks to all for the leads.

What did reef keepers do before the internet?

  6. My firefish has always been an open water swimmer, he would find that niche between my two mountains of live rock and hang out there all day until feeding or bedtime.

The other day I noticed him sleeping in the corner of the tank when the lights went off. Normally he would sleep in the coral head.

Didn't think too much about it, but the next day I noticed some of my hermits had died.

Ok, check water, everything I tested was good. Performed my weekly water change the next day and retested. Everything where it has been since forever.

Then I see this small (1") hairy crab in my tank. I didn't remember inviting any crabs, but I had some newer live rock and figured he was a hitchhiker.

Is there any chance that this crab is the reason my hermits are dead and my firefish is missing? I picked out the rock I saw him on and dropped him in my water bucket. He didn't care for the light too much, so it was too hard to get a picture. Best image I can find says Mithrax, but not sure.

Any thoughts? Where would the body of the firefish be?

  7. once you get the equipment, its cheaper to make your own. And its cheap insurance. PM me if you want help finding equipment...it doesn't have to break the bank!

If I get a bonus this year I'd like to take you up on it. I usually keep 3 5 Gallon containers on hand with an airstone in each.

  8. Murphy's Second Law states in order to do something you must do something else first.

So, in my case I need a better lighting system.

What would a good light set for a 55G?

I have 70 lbs of Live rock and 2 inches of live sand, plenty of mushrooms and polyps along with various other stuff attached to rocks.

    Suggestions?

    Thx
