  1. I have a JBJ 28 with this skimmer.

    I'd rate it a C-

    Pros:

    * Fits in center chamber with some mods to the lid.

    * Relatively quiet

    * Can pull out some great skimmate when everything is adjusted properly

    * Price (I got it for $49)

    Cons:

    * Needs constant adjustment or perfect top-off water level

    * Doesn't always put out great skimmate

    * Spits out lots of micro-bubbles

Some say you can mod it to reduce or eliminate the microbubbles, but I haven't been able to do that successfully.  If you could, I'd rate it A-.

  2. so the tank IS drilled? i guess im just confused with the megaflow thing. the one at RCA is not drilled..

    just wondering :)

No problem, yes this tank is drilled.  It is ReefReady, drilled with two holes, installed with a center overflow box, durso stand pipes, and flow accelarators are included.  I think perhaps the confusion is that Oceanic makes two models of this tank, a RR and a non-RR version.  Mine IS the ReefReady version.  Oceanic calls their ReefReady system Megaflow.

Here is an image I found that shows the center overflow and accessory kit; the corner protectors in this image are there for shipping and are removed for use.  Also note all the edges are mitred to a really nice finish:

Here is another picture with the Coralife Aqualight (also part of the Oceanic brand) installed:

  3. Hi folks, I've got an Oceanic Illuminata 57g ReefReady Rimless Aquarium for sale. New, never touched water. About 4 Months old. Comes with Megaflow system w/Stand Pipes.

    $350 OBO Price Drop

    $300

Can take pics myself if wanted but its exactly the same as above.

EDIT: This is the tank only, the sumps, pumps, lights, and the tech series stand is not included. It seems my description could cause some confusion. the Megaflow overflow system by Oceanic includes the drilled reefready tank, overflow box, and an accessory kit which includes Durso Stand Pipes, as well as flow accelerators.

  4.

I'm worried that such explosive growth will unbalance my tank. Is that a silly worry?

I've never heard that Coraline growth would seriously unbalance a tank, although I am no expert on the subject.  Yes, Coraline requires calcium and magnesium, but no more than water changes or proper dosing would provide.  I think the magnesium sink would be much more of a "worry" than the calcium sink.

My personal opinion on Coraline is that in general, it is a healthy indicator of your tank, but I wouldn't go out of my way to either grow it or stop it.  Personally I've noticed that my rocks with the healthiest coraline growth have zero other micro or macro algaes on it.  They also seem to be the "healthiest".  That said, I'd rather my rocks be encrusted with a nice encrusting coral.

I use B-Ionic 2-part solution to keep all my water parameters healthy, my opinion might change were I not to use this product.

  5. Deal.  I have a nice sized frag of take over will trade you (I think the fire & ices are spoken for at the moment).

Sounds good!  Although if you ever frag any more fire & ice i'd be interested, they look seriously awesome :)

  6. HA! or perhaps "sump squad"? It's too bad that saturdays are the meeting days, it's hard for a chef to get saturdays off. Well if you have any frags youd like to get rid of any time just let me know.

Does this mean all our future reef club meetings will be catered?  :)

  7. Does your light still work without a bulb or two?  If so, and you really think it is the light, you could try removing a bulb.  I've also heard of cheap, or bad bulbs browning out corals, but I don't know too much about that.

  8. Mark...we said hi to your six line over at FB tonight.  He looked home sicksad.gif

It is one of reefing's greatest tragedies BUT I can remedy the situation by dropping my six-line off in Mark's tank during the meeting!

  9. Better watch it, if you catch your six-line, Mark will put you to work catching his!

I would actually like another six-line for my tank, but I am unsure how well my existing one would adapt.  I have seen other tanks with multiple six-lines, but I assume they were added at the same time.

Well, I have actually already tested my trap with my six-line.  Catch and release if you will.  I just got to make sure I don't feed for a day or two beforehand and be patient Saturday morning.  If I catch him, I will bring my little homemade trap along if Mark wants.  Now I don't know anything about multiple six-lines in the same tank, but if you decide you want him, please take mine before Mark's  :D

  10. I'm not sure I can bring much, but I have fragged some Xenia if there is any left I will bring them, and if there is any interest in a six-line wrasse, I will bring him too assuming I can catch him.

  11. Ok it says to add 1ml per 4 gallons of each part every day to start. I just changed my water(5g) about 30 minutes ago so I'm going to wait a couple of hours and test ca/kh and see where I'm at then. They way it has been going after a WC is my ca/kh rise to 400/7. I'd like it around 420/9. Am I on the right path? Grrr why the hell am I so confused right now.

That is a starting dose, and you will need to adjust it accordingly.  There is a max of 1ml per gallon of each component daily.  Just do daily testings of calcium, dkh, and pH, adjusting the dosages until everything is normalized.

BTW, I use B-Ionic in addition to water changes to regulate my calcium, hardness and pH with good success.  It's also supposed to provide all the important trace elements.  I think it is a great product so far.
