  1. Nudi and worse, they are camoflauged to look like a leather.
  2. Eheim 1262? Roger from Tunze is out of stock for the 6100's. Nothing you can really do but wait.
  3. Mike nailed it dead on. Closed loops are expensive to install, and difficult to maintain (unless you use tons of true unions ballvalves which make it even more expensive). IME you cannot get the wide of flow of tunze stream through a closed loop, unless you build a completely ridiculous one like Greenmako's. Hopefully Brian (Greenmako) will chime in and tell you a ballpark figure for his closed loop because it was way more expensive than I had thought initially.
  4. It's hard to give you an exact number for total tank turnover but 40 is probably a good start. What you're trying to do, is create a tank with no dead spots, and plenty of random flow.
  5. A space in the wall or cabinet on the side of the overflow is a big help. The other main thing to remember is to make the top accessible on both sides. It's a huge PITA when only one side is open. John
  6. A good general rule is 5x the volume of the tank should go through the sump hourly. This is much slower than many people run but it cuts down on noise, salt creep, and allows you to have a smaller sump and return pump. It also allows your skimmer to stay in contact with the nutrients longer and the sump becomes a settling chamber for detritus. John
  7. Tank is moved, and that PVC bottom is worth its weight in gold.
  8. Jason, The tank looked great yet again and I was completely blown away by the difference the T5's made. Thanks for hosting another great meeting. John
  9. If you're going to do it, I'd suck out all the sand with the rock and livestock in a rubbermaid container. Old sandbeds have way too much poisonous material in them for to comfortably suck the sandbed out slowly.
  10. Regarding Magnesium: The best calcium reactor magnesium supplement I've heard of is by zeovit. You can buy it at either www.captivereef.com or www.finsreef.com I think. Fauna Marin also released something along the same lines being distributed by www.aquariumobsessed.com On the calcium reactor and alkalinity, simply decrease how hard the reactor works. Lower the PH if using a controller or slow the bubble rate otherwise. John
  11. I've setup several tanks with only one stream and it works fine. Might I suggest a controllable stream on one side and possibly 1 or 2 maxijet 1200's with the hydor flo attachment. We recently installed a Tunze 6100 with two of the above maxijet 1200's with flos and I've been very impressed with the result. HTH John
  12. Personally I use AquaFX units in both the store and at home. The unit is mounted to a sturdy aluminum bracket and the owner is one of the nicest ladies I've met. Their website is http://www.aquariumwaterfilters.com/ John
  13. The greatest ich cure in the world is the fish's natural immune system. Try enriching the food in a vitamin and alternating fat soak and make sure the water levels don't swing. One thing that many people overlook is that it's getting colder and so are our tanks. Another problem that occurs during winter is a low PH due to the high amount of C02 in the home so watch PH closely as well. Have you been feeding the tang nori or other macro algae? These fish are the literal cows of the sea and eat all day long.
  14. Actually the Dow Filmtech 50 GPD membrane technically has the best rejection rate. Remember to pass your water through carbon and sediment before the RO to help the filter to last longer.
  15. Andrew, Great job with the front page as it looks incredible! I really like the news feed feature you've incorporated into our page. We all appreciate your hard work and great job again! John
  16. Before you spend any money on phosphate absorbtion media, I'd look in to checking the TDS coming out of your RO/DI unit and also research a protein skimmer.
  17. So if I'm reading correctly, no skimmer? Your flow seems like it should be more than adequate but a wet dry with only mechanical filtration is not enough to keep our lovely problem algaes away. TDS are the total dissolved solids (in parts per million) and ideally they should be 0 after an RO/DI filter.
  18. When you answer Clint's questions, also include what kind of flow you have in your tank please. John
  19. I have not but I'd assume that they're either hard to keep, or not reef safe. Most of the stars in the ocean should stay in the ocean ie: feather star, marbled star, and 4 out of 5 blue linkias.
  20. I personally don't need a controller to control more than 8 outlets on my tank at home. Their are several items that I want on no matter what that can be plugged straight into a power strip.
  21. Direct would be the best method but I hope to stock them eventually.
  22. Yep Stylaster was the word I was looking for!
  23. Yeah if it's what I'm thinking it is, it's a filter feeding organism that has sort of a stony look. Almost impossible to keep in captivity but again, haven't seen the specimen at Aquatek.
