Truckin
Does anyone know a source for pickling lime (calcium hydroxide) in Austin? (Yes, the kind used to make pickles for eating.) The book, The Coral Reef Aquarium by Ron Shimek, Ph.D., discusses the benefits of Kalkwasser and that it can be made as a saturated solution of pickling lime in water. It also mentions that pickling lime is way cheaper than other sources of calcium hydroxide. By the way, this is a pretty good book for newbies like me. Cool Breeze
I get chemicals at wholesale through my company. How much do you need? I can get 50 lbs of lab grade Ca(OH)2 for $350. I can get smaller qty too.
troypt
I bought containers of Mrs. Wages pickling lime from Walmart. They told me they only carry it at certain times of the year, when people are canning food. SO when I found it there, I bought a few containers to last me for awhile. caferacermike
As was said by TroypT. I lucked out one year and got there as they were clearing the shelves of the stuff, price was about $0.50 per jar that day. I bought a few. It's good stuff and you can't beat the price, I think it's $4 regular price.
Entropy
You can find Mrs. Wages online as well. The shipping kills the price though unless you buy a lot of it.
princer7
I get it from BulkReefSupply.com. I also stock up on carbon and Phosban media at the same time.
