new55galSALT
I've always wanted a porcupine puffer or a dog faced puffer. My largest tank size is a 75 gallon (77.7 gallon), everything I've read online says it should be 180g. Could I house one until it got bigger or is that shunned apon? new55galSALT
I know we have the tang police but what about puffer police??
Dan H
180 seems minimum to me for a Diodon Holocanthus. They can get to 12 inches and eat a ton! Plus they like to roam so even though they aren't fast swimmers, they still move a lot. I suppose Meg and I qualify for the Puffer Police. We used to run porcinepuffer.com. Sascha D.
We don't have tang police here. That's another site It's not uncommon to see those puffers get up to 8" after a year or two. However, it is uncommon to see specimens above 10" in the home aquarium. Porcupine Puffers get larger than Dog Face Puffers. Dog Face Puffers don't have a very large swimming requirement like tangs. They don't need a 6' long tank and their turning radius is very small so the width isn't a concern. They do have a large bio load though. In my opinion 180 gallons is in regards to their maximum size, which likely won't be achieved. I would say a 120 is minimum to keep one long term. If you put one in a 75g then you'll likely find yourself with a very large fish within a year. They aren't reef safe and they will eat your invertebrates. Some have been known to eat small fish when they're hungry. You'll probably also find yourself with permanently elevated nitrates and a blanket of cyanobacteria. +brian.srock
I have a Porcupine in my 90. He is a fat little pig but he's very small. He's my wife's favorite fish because he's always following you around and has those big eyes.

Sascha D.
Its up to you. I would say you have about a year, maybe two, if you buy a juvenile. Sent from my SGH-T989 using Tapatalk
