My photography skills have been lacking so I am going to work on better photos. At least what my Iphone will allow.

I picked up a few chalices but haven't been able to get photos of them all quite yet.

I got:

Thanks a lot man. You're welcome to stop by anytime you are in the area. I have been pretty fortunate getting some good deals and making some trades.

Unfortunately, I lost 7 of the 12 frags that I got a couple of weeks ago from a guy in Ohio. 3 had rtn'd when I got them. 2 others went within an hour of unpacking them and acclimating. And another two by the end of the following day. But I already have arrangements with the guy to cut some more pieces and let them heal a little longer before he ships them to me this time.

Hopefully it will work out this time.

Thanks! It's been exciting getting this one going.

Unfortunately I have started to have a few issues with my acans and chalices. I started to see a little bit of tissue recession on one of my acans first and thought it was a peppermint shrimp eating it, but after removing them I started to lose a couple more that were on the other side of the tank as well as one of my My Miami frags. I thought it was a flow or light issue since I had just recently put new bulbs in so I tried relocating a few things and it just continued to happen. I started to see it on more acans and chalices so I finally decided it was time to do something about it.

After quite a bit of research I decided it was some sort of parasite. Either black bugs or something similar. I tried to get interceptor and sentinel from the vet but only found one vet that had it across town. Decided I didn't want to risk loosing any of my crabs or cleaner shrimp and getting them out wouldn't be easy, I decided to pull out every single acan and chalice and dip them in Revive. I have read mixed reviews but there were enough positive reviews that I decided to go for it. If I need to do sentinel or Interceptor or whatever, then I can if this doesn't work.

I dipped them for 15 minutes even though I read 5-10 should be enough. After that I pulled them and put them in my 10 gallon quarantine that has been set up for a few months. The next morning every acan had feeder tentacles out and looked better than before the dip. I made a small area in the corner if my tank where I could put a piece of egg crate down and set them all on it for easier observation. I did forget one acan so I will be dipping that one this evening.

Hopefully all will recover and I won't lose anything. I lost one large red on red acan colony except for the smallest polyp still alive. I'm hoping this one will make it. Also lost a small 2 eye frag of the My Miami chalice but I still have a couple others so I'm not really too bummed even though it would have been a nice piece to trade at the fag swap today...

I will update soon, hopefully with good news.

So I finally have frags in my sump. I figured since they all came from tanks that were running led's I might as well acclimate them to my display tank in my sumo under my ai sol led that I revently put under there. I have had a few tester frags to make sure it wasn't too much light and I think I should be fine going from the led to halides and vise versa.

Here is a pic of the frag rack I am using and I also have a piece of eggcrate angled at about 70% and has frags aligned vertically more or less. It really helps to hold a lot more pieces without taking up too much more space. And everything has been coloring up rather quickly. I just think I need a bit more flow but I will probably do that after I post this update.

Love that turquoise acro. Gonna have to snag a frag of that one day. This will be interesting to see how your AI sol does in the same system as the halides do. Looks like you're running them fairly white heavy? Or is that just for pictures?

Yeah I am real excited to experiment and see how everything does.

And yeah I had the white up to 100% and the blues were less than 30% each just for the pictures.

I can't remeber exactly what I have them set on at their peak but I just tried to replicate the colors and intensity visually and the lb turned them down just a little bit. I had a birdsnest lose a little bit of color but within a few days it started to color back up. Everything else looks rather well as of now.

I think I am going to cut a few pieces of the turquoise Lovelli this week. You're more than welcome to a frag.

Found this little gem at Aquadome the other day. I am 99% positive it's Joe the Coral.

Couldn't pass it up since it has been on my wish list for a few months now.

post-1459-0-12814500-1414949676_thumb.jp

All of my new incoming frags have been going straight down in my frag setup in my sump since the majority have been coming from tanks running led's and I have metal halides in the display. I was running a single AI sol in the sump, but have since decided that while one is definitely bright enough with the baffles in my sump and the angles I just don't have quite the coverage I would like. So I added a second AI Sol. It helped dramatically. I was running the first one at 35% white and 40% on the blue and royal blue but once I added the second I had to turn them both down to 30% white and 35% on both Blues. There is a long ramp period but my peak is for about 7 hours at those settings. The lights are on for a total of 12hrs opposite of my display. It has kept my ph stable and I haven't has any issues other than losing a piece of birdsnest that was so used to being blasted in the top of my display by halides. I haven't moved anything up into the display yetto see how the transfer goes, but I will likely move a piece or two sometime in the next week or so.

I am also going to go to a substantially larger sump that will be designed around holding frags. I have noticed much better polyp extension on the corals in the sump over the display. I also added a 1300gph koralia directly under my frag rack blowing straight up at the frags, so that might be contributing. They all seem to be loving it and many are gaining more and more color every day with noticeable growth.

You can visibly see the difference in water movement from the pictures at the top of this page of the frag rack water line and this pick. As well as the difference a second light added. Night and day difference even at 1/3 of the max intensity.

Throwback Thursday!

I just came across a picture of my first successful SPS tank from around 5 years ago. Man I miss having a few of those colonies. I've told stories of the pieces I lost moving. Well here they are. I was way to stubborn to sell pretty much everything except for a few frags and wound up killing every single piece on here. First time I had ever moved a tank and only thought I knew what I was doing. The worst part about it was the fact that I had a 65 gallon mixed reef with twice as many corals as this one and a 125 gallon mixed reef with way more corals than I care to remember.

Come to think of it, I kinda want to track some similar pieces down. Anybody see anything that resembles something they have and want to get rid of the whole thing or frags of it? ?

Update Video. Shot 11/06/14.

Not the best job I could have done as I was trying to keep my toddler from getting into the video and had one hand on her head by the end of the video. Good thing for sound editing.

But the lights were dimming by the time I was able too try again and there was way too much blue.

Thanks, I appreciate the compliment, but personally think I could have improved on many aspect if the video. It takes some practice to be able to get a good even shot, but I'm learning. Soon I will be getting a much better camera instead of just my iphone. I do have a GoPro Hero3. Maybe I will put it in the tank and see what kind of shots I am able to get.

But man, do I ever wish I did have that much space. Well for the most part, If I did I would feel the need to fill it with more corals and I can already see the need for some established colonies I'm sure there are worse problems to have though. But for now I think I will stay with what I have now.
