George Monnat Jr
I'm starting a thread here where I'm going to post pics and video of the different things I've seen on my dive trips. I'll make other threads for individual trips, so this is just a collection. Or a checklist, maybe. My dive camera is a cheap one ($300 with light, that's cheap), so the pictures aren't always the best and usually lack the reds and yellows. I think I'll post for each "thing" that I saw, so I can include better pictures from the web.
George Monnat Jr
Let's start it off with Butterflyfish. The site didn't like all the pics in one post, so let's call this Butterflyfish Part 1. A pair of Four-Spotted Butterflyfish or Fourspot Butterflyfish (Chaetodon quadrimaculatus) in Sharks Cove, Oahu, HI on 08 August 2012. The top picture is a pair of Spotfin Butterflyfish (Chaetodon ocellatus) on the Little Sarah oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico out of South Padre Island on 28 August 2011. The bottom picture is another pair of Spotfin Butterflyfish on an oil rig out of Port Aransas, TX on 16 June 2012. A bunch of Millet or Lemon Butterflyfish (Chaetodon miliaris) off of the south-eastern tip of Oahu, HI on 05 August 2012. Top picture is a pair of Yellow Longnose Butterflyfish (Forcipiger flavissimus) with my camera, and bottom picture is some Yellow Longnose Butterflyfish off the south-eastern tip of Oahu, HI near "the Barge" on 05 August 2012. [second picture taken by Mark of Island Divers Hawaii Kai with a much better camera.]
George Monnat Jr
Butterflyfish Part 2 Top picture is a Yellow Pyramid Butterflyfish (Hemitaurichthys polylepis) with my camera, and the middle picture [taken by Mark of Island Divers Hawaii Kai with a much better camera] is some more Yellow Longnose Butterflyfish and a Yellow Pyramid Butterflyfish, all off the south-eastern tip of Oahu, HI on "the Barge" on 05 August 2012. The bottom picture is another Yellow Pyramid Butterflyfish but this time off of the southern Ryukyu Islands, Okinawa on 26 May 2011. An Ornate Butterflyfish (Chaetodon ornatissimus) off the south-eastern tip of Oahu, HI near "the Barge" on 05 August 2012. [Taken by Mark of Island Divers Hawaii Kai with a much better camera.] A Tear Drop Butterflyfish (Chaetodon unimaculatus) off of the southern Ryukyu Islands, Okinawa on 26 May 2011. A Vagabond Butterflyfish (Chaetodon vagabundus) off of the southern Ryukyu Islands, Okinawa on 26 May 2011. (Ignore the tang for now, ) A horrible picture of a Raccoon Butterflyfish (Chaetodon lunula) off of the southern Ryukyu Islands, Okinawa on 26 May 2011. It's better than a bigfoot pic, so I think I can claim it. A school/shoal of at least four different species of Butterflyfish off the south-eastern tip of Oahu, HI near "the Barge" on 05 August 2012. George Monnat Jr
I spent hours last night finding pictures and uploading them to Photobucket. I think I have enough now for lots of posts. I welcome comments or feedback. If I've misidentified something or didn't notice something in a picture, please comment. George Monnat Jr
Triggerfish A couple of Humu Rectangle Triggerfish (Rhinecanthus rectangulus), or as my niece there loves to say a Humuhumunukunukuapua'a, in Shark Cove, Oahu, HI on 08 August 2012. A Scythe or Lei Triggerfish (Sufflamen bursa) in Shark Cove, Oahu, HI on 08 August 2012. A Grey Triggerfish (Balistes capriscus) on the Texas Clipper out of South Padre Island on 27 August 2011. A Pinktail Triggerfish (Melichthys vidua) off of the southern Ryukyu Islands, Okinawa on 26 May 2011. Of course, my camera didn't pick up the pink part. George Monnat Jr
The Surgeonfish, or Tangs, Part 1 A Ringtail Surgeonfish (Acanthurus blochii), or Mata, in Sharks Cove, Oahu, HI on 08 August 2012. That's my wife at the top of the picture. The tang didn't care. It was well over a foot long. An Orangespine Unicornfish or Naso Tang (Naso lituratus), or Umaumalei, in Sharks Cove, Oahu, HI on 08 August 2012. Saw some huge ones with massive spikes/tangs snorkeling with our nieces in Hanauma Bay a few days earlier. They reminded me of Stegosaurus not unicorns. We were on our way to go diving in Hanauma (been planning for years) when we got robbed. Oh well, there's always next time. A Goldring Surgeonfish (Ctenochaetus strigosus), or Kole, in Sharks Cove, Oahu, HI on 08 August 2012. Okole is Hawaiian pidgin for butt; I don't know if there's a link. An Achilles Tang (Acanthurus achilles), or Paku'iku'i, in Sharks Cove, Oahu, HI on 08 August 2012. An Orangeband Surgeonfish (Acanthurus olivaceus), or Na'ena'e, in Sharks Cove, Oahu, HI on 08 August 2012. I think these are also Orangeband Surgeonfish (Acanthurus olivaceus) seen off of the southern Ryukyu Islands, Okinawa on 26 May 2011.

George Monnat Jr
The Surgeonfish, or Tangs, Part 2 Some Yellow Tangs (Zebrasoma flavescens), or Lau'i-pala, off of the south-eastern tip of Oahu, HI on 05 August 2012. I think those are big Scopas Tangs (Zebrasoma scopas) on the right in the top photo and left in the bottom one, seen off of the southern Ryukyu Islands, Okinawa on 26 May 2011. A Whitebar Surgeonfish (Acanthurus leucopareius), left, in Sharks Cove, Oahu, HI on 08 August 2012. I think the fish on the right is a Banded Damselfish/Hawaiian Sergeant/Mamo (Abudefduf abdominalis) not a Convict Tang, but the stripes go down further than normal. They're way too wide to be a Convict Tang, and I don't see the tang or the face shape. A trio of Whitespotted Surgeonfish (Acanthurus guttatus) in Sharks Cove, Oahu, HI on 08 August 2012. A massive school of Whitebar Surgeonfish (Acanthurus leucopareius), Convict Tangs (Acanthurus triostegus, Manini) and Whitespotted Surgeonfish (Acanthurus guttatus) in Sharks Cove, Oahu, HI on 08 August 2012. All I saw was $$$.
George Monnat Jr
Here's a video of the massive tang school/shoal in the previous post. There's a big Achilles that cruises in and out. I think that's the one I chased for the rear-end Achilles shot above.
