Complete loss everything dead

Recommended Posts

This thread really makes me think I want to go do a water change on both of my BC29. It's been just over two months since the last change. Wish I wasn't so lazy though, I just top off when I see the pump suck air!

Bio, stop making me laugh. I once described myself as the "laissez faire" reefer. Not to far from lazy reefer.

Drew, you should tell people that the majority of your corals did not die. It helps with the diagnostics. With respect to removing all sediments and flushing/cleaning out tank to start over, I could not disagree more. Now that I have thought about it, especially with the fact that the coral did not go thru dieoff, I suspect an oxygen deficancy. Nothing kills fish faster than lack of oxygen. If you have not had a nutriant export problem with out of control nuisance algae, I say, what is the problem with your substrate and why discard it. If you are interested in DSB methods, then you need a mature sandbed with nutriants/food in it. Merely add a finer grade sand onto your existing sandbed. I would recommmend adding 1" to half of the tank bottom. Each week alternate sand addittions to different sides of tank untill a depth of 4"-6" is achieved.

Olite/Sugar sand .2mm - 1.2mm

Special Reef Grade 1mm-2mm

Crushed Coral 2mm - 5.5mm

If you think that your present substrate is closer to the crushed coral size grade, then I would add Olite as 1 part and Special Reef Grade as three parts until the desired sandbed depth is reached. If you read the info at the links posted, it will describe which fish prefer which grade of substrate. Reduce circulation on bottom of tank to allow smaller sediments to filter down thru the present course gravel. I would also start looking for detrivores kits to populate your deep sand bed.
