+ludakris
I have a mag 7 for my return right now in a 90 gallon system. One koralia 1400 I think. I have about 5 ft of head and with the 7 it barely moves the water. I was looking into upgrading to a mag12. At 5 ft this would produce about 1100 gph. Is this too much? I would like to keep sps in the future but mainly lps right now. If anyone has any other suggestions I'm all ears also
victoly
Always better to oversize a pump and valve it down than to have a pump at 100% capacity and be insufficient. The one caveat is that a larger mag will add more heat. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
+ludakris
What about an external? Would that help with heat
jestep
The external might help a little, but the heat has to go somewhere. If you don't have a fan on it removing the heat from the area, much of it will still get transferred to the tank. Personally, I'm a fan of lower sump turnover and high flow directly in the tank but 10x is probably about right. What overflow are you currently running? Assuming it will handle it, I would shoot for something in the 800gph - 900gph range. If you aren't on a strict budget the Eheim 1262 would be my first choice. Eheim compact 5000 would be #2 and it's adjustable. I know the mag's are a budget workhorse, but I am Eheim sold if it's at all possible. +ludakris
I'm running 3/4" return and a 1" drain. I'm assuming that would knock the 1100 out of the picture.
