Long
I will be running my new 2x 250 mh 20K mogul base without the temper glass. I know lots of folks out there are running 400W INSIDE their canopy without any protective temper glass. For the guys that are running HID without the protective glass, are you guys seeing any issues with the sps or your fish? Do you really have to use temper glass or can I just use stnd glass? My opening is only 6.50" x 36". Finally where is the cheapest place in town to get some glass if I decide to add glass later? thanks for reading. DoMa
It will be OK to use non protective UV lamps on your tank. When you go to work everyday, do you use sunblock?
Timfish
As far as UV it's hard to say how it will affect your corals. Some corals produce proteins and pigments that act as UV blockers so they may not be bothered at all but you probably won't know until you try it. As far as the tempered safety glass while it may not be necessary I wouldn't want water splashing directly on a super hot HID bulb and regular glass probably wouldn't stand up to the heat as well.
