Hermits & Snails from the beach

My neighbor went to the beach and thought it would be a great idea to bring me hermits and snails for my tank. These are the biggest hermit crabs that I have ever seen.

Not too sure about putting them in my tank. Anyone know if they are safe?

I wouldn't have qualms about adding one or two to your tank unless you have snails. I've got the stripped hermits from Galviston in several of my tanks and haven't had problems with my corals. They are ok algae eaters but very clumsy and they will kill snails to use the shell.

Some of those hermits get to be the size of a baseball. I've heard negative reports about them eating some soft corals as they graze. It's almost always with a tag line about them being "hairy". So if yours are not hairy then it's a risk, if they are hairy it's probably a certainty.

those are oliva snails and they are snail predatory snails. E.G. they will kill your good snails then die. The common coastal hermits are great for fish only tanks but are too aggressive for reef tanks.
