Overflow Standpipe

Why is the intake for this kind of overflow standpipe (http://www.dursostandpipes.com/) pointing downward instead of upward? Don't you need to start the siphon if it's installed this way?

BTW, anyone know of any better standpipes availble anywhere? I had GreenMako's CJ Standpipes bookmarked, but the site is no longer functional (please, no DIY, I might hurt myself).

did you ever play with a glass in the bath tub water? if you put the glass in upside down, the water level in the glass is the same as the rest of the tub. In this case, the water goes over the edge and falls down the pipe.

There actually isn't a siphon in this setup. You drill a hole in that top cap to make sure air can get in to prevent the siphon.

I always end up turning the inlet to the side. It makes it quieter. I think that they are meant to be down so that the pipe can be lower and still get water in it. You shouldn't have to start a syphon. The water pressure should get it all flowing.
