  1. I have a big bucket of chemicals, test kits, supplements (iodine, calcium, strontinum, purple-up, etc) and filter feeder food that came along with a tank I purchased last year. I have no idea how old it is - I'm guessing at least two or three years. Can't find any expiration dates, and I'm leery about using it. But I hate to just toss it - this stuff is expensive! Any thoughts?
  2. Help! My powerhead just busted - does anyone have a Koralia 3 or 4 they are willing to part with? I'm looking for two of either model.
  3. Willing to take 100. Great deal on a great light!

  5. The starfish were included with the rock. If you're interested, I could probably hunt some up for you, though.
  6. Approximately 15lbs of live rock. Four good sized pieces and some little chunks. Was base rock, but it does have a little coraline growing and some little feather dusters. Also has several baby (quarter sized or bigger) serpent star fish, and a pretty purple and green mushroom or two attached. 30.00 cash, or will trade for a Koralia 3-4, interesting soft corals, or possibly a fish.
  7. Thanks so much for all the suggestions. I tried wedging it a bit between some rocks near the top, but he ended up drifting toward the bottom. I had to leave my powerheads off for the whole day, but he finally ended up attaching to a rock. How often do anemones need to be fed?
  8. Ok, I will try that. Thanks, seahorsejl!
  9. Does anyone have an opinion? Should I let the anemone float, or try and confine him? Will he damage my softies?
  10. My tank has been up and running for about 8 months. I started with all the live rock, some sand, and some water from a healthy, established tank. My water has been consistently testing normal, with no serious spikes. 65 gal with 15 gal sump, approx 100# live rock, protien skimmer, fresh charcoal every couple of weeks. T5 lights - 2x white 18ks, 2 actinics. The store I got it from was a chain. I'm sure that any other LFS around here would have been alot more knowlegeable about their stock. Sorry for the bad photos - he decided to hide behind the pagoda and I can't get a clear shot right now. Will the anemone damage soft corals by brushing by, or does it take alot of exposure to the tentacles over time? Should I try and stick him in between something, or just let him float until he finds his happy place? Thanks for your opinions,
  11. Ok, so I think I did something silly - I went out and bought a clownfish, and saw that he was enjoying this anemone. So I bought it too. Well, I thought it would be an easy keeper, and didn't put much thought into it. I looked up some articles on how to keep them (as he was floating in my tank - I know, I know ) , and discovered that they can be difficult to keep. Well, information that would have been useful before I bought it. So after slowly acclimating it, I put it gently on the bottom of the tank between a couple of rocks and turned off the pump so he wouldn't get churned around the tank. Since then, he has been floating around the tank, bumping into things (I'm worried he's going to destroy my softies), and an hour ago he ended up wedged between a rock and the glass, all smooshed-like. So... 1) What kind of experiences have you had with anenomes? Is this a bad idea, or maybe do-able? 2) Is there any way to make him stop floating everywhere? I'm wondering if he'll ever attach. 3) Will this little tentacled beast kill of my corals? I have a variety of mushrooms and polyps, nothing serious. BTW, I haven't identified the anemone yet - it's the size of my fist with a pink base, brownish-pink tentacles with green tips. Any guesses? The geniuses at the store had no clue.
  12. Oh, really? I didn't know there was a difference. I didn't see any other blue bulb options at the LFS.
  13. Well, I just replaced my compact fluorescents (2 10k 96watt / 2 actinic blue) with HO T5's (2 18k 39 watt/ 2 actinic blue 39 watt) The white bulbs alternate with the blue. It should look good, right? Well, it doesn't. The colors look pretty washed out - flat and almost dead looking in comparison. Even my husband noticed the difference, and that's saying something . What do you guys think ?
  14. has not set their status

  15. Not at all, polarbear RO is the best way to go. I have been using an RO/DI unit that is set up in my garage. I may just be really lazy, but it is a real pain to get the water going (I have to go into the garage and set up a bucket, go around the house, turn on the faucet, make sure it doesn't overflow, go back around the house to turn it off - usually walking through some mud because the hose leaks sometimes, trying not to trip on the dogs - then haul the water to the tank trying not to spill on the laminate flooring - then I try to get it into the sump without spilling but that never happens ........... then I do it again a few days later. arg.) I tried storing the water, but that did not work. It lasted about a week before it started to smell, even though it was a brand new container. Since my tank loses about a gallon and a half per day, I'm looking forward to getting a top off system to cut back on all that water hauling. I'm also planning on installing an RO system in the kitchen to make things more convenient.
  16. Does anyone have a top off system for a reasonable price? My tank is evaporating like crazy. I also have some items to trade (or partial trade) for a top off if anyone's interested - an Eheim filter, some mushrooms (green, blue and purple), some leathers........ Just let me know!
  17. Well, I took the contents of someone's tank they had to break down (rock, 1/2 of the sand, 1/2 of the water, fish, snails, shrimp, crab) and moved it to mine - that's why I have so much in such a new tank. Surprisingly, my levels never spiked - so far so good. I do have about 7 extra shells of various sizes, and the shells of the eaten snails remain empty, so I'm betting they were just hungry.
  18. Good idea - I will try that too. Thanks so much, all, for the helpful suggestions!
  19. I started feeding sinking pellets a couple of days ago, and my crabs mobbed them as soon as they hit the sand - they looked very hungry. I'm betting they ate the snail and conch alive (what a way to go ) because they weren't getting enough grub. There have been no more snail deaths - in fact, more babies have popped up ....... and the circle of life continues.
