  1. Many years ago we set up a small 40g tank with one of the clay soils and a substrate heater. It really seemed to work well. The idea is that the warm water will rise out of the substrate while cool water will replace it, thus constantly circulating water through the substrate

  2. Robb is right. It has been said that taping pics of clown fish hosting can induce the real ones into hosting.

It has been said that most all of our clowns have been tank bred and raised for so many years now that these F2, F3, F4 fish no longer understand, nor care about hosting.

  3. You can generally call down to the permit offices and ask about your project. Don't give them any real information. Just say that you are interested in adding screens, don't tell them the address and such. They can tell you whether you need permits or not. If you give them your info and there is a disagreement then they now have your info to come and visit. They tend not to know what they are doing, ha professionals, so try and write down the person's name and the time you called and what the verdict was.

I was about to buy a small shed for my property and the sales guy offered me the largest they make for a little more than the small one. I jumped on that. 24Lx14'W and 14'H. I measured out my property and knew it was big enough for the shed and should be good for codes. I called down to the office and we got to talking and I was asking about set backs from the house and fence line. I offered my address and the lady told me there was absolutely no way I could have that shed in my neighborhood, none of the yards would allow for it. We argued back and forth and when she finally listened to me saying that my yard was 50' from house to fence S-N and 100' from E-W you could just hear her voice crack. She told me she did not believe me. I went immediately to the office with my land survey and a to scale line drawing of the shed. They finally looked at it and said, well shoot we couldn't stop you from building 4 sheds on your property, $32 please. I'm actually glad I paid for the permit since a neighbor complained about a year later about the shed, not to me of course, no to the city. The city contacted me about the complaint and how I need to take the shed down, blah blah blah. The guy finally took a breath and I asked him why did I pay the city $32 so they could later on call and harass me? I got a pleasant "I'm sorry, I'll look into that". I received a formal letter from RR outlining the original protest and the city's response that I had all the proper permits and that the shed had been inspected and that they would not be proceeding any further.

  4. Hrmm. Maybe part of my problem is my reluctance to remove LR from my tank for adhering frags. It's not something I'm particularly interested in doing, hence the 2 part... but obviously it's not working to my satisfaction.

I'm not seeing anywhere that anyone said to remove your live rock from your tank. I did see mentioned a few times to dry the frag or the new plug's base before applying glue.

  5. I only use super glue gel. I tried using a 2 part a few times and it made my skimmer go nuts each time. Then the plug would end up breaking free anyways. I've been exclusively using the 3 for a $1 Super Glue gels from the dollar store for over 6 years. They now come in these nice foil packs to keep them fresher, When I hit the store I buy all they have since sometimes they don't have the gel. For $20 I get 60 tubes. As a general rule I use half a tube for a small frag directly to the rock, or a full tube for a plug to rock. If my plug is the type for eggcrate I will usually cut the frag away, mount the frag to rock somewhere, and then save the plug with a bit of the frag on it. I let that grow out and pass it on to another reefer.

Some tips. Scout around the tnak for where you are going to mount the frag long before applying your glue. Once satisfied with the location use a hard bristle toothbrush or a very small parts cleaning brush made of stainless steel to clean the rock where you want the frag. If you are cutting a fresh frag, or if you are mounting a plug, dry the area to be glued with a towel first then apply lots of glue. Place the glued frag in the area you want it, hold it for about 5 seconds, then begin to twist it a little, push it down again, do this a couple of times to make sure you work the glue into the small holes in the rock. By cleaning the rock with a brush you remove the slick algae that prevents a good bond. Remember when you were a kid in elementary school and you played with clay in art class? They made you score the two pieces before sticking them together? Yah same thing. Don't skimp on glue, use lots. Don't waste your money on $6 a bottle Loctite. It's not worth it. Not when 33 cent tubes work just as well and you don't feel bad using an entire tube on a single plug.

  6. Kyle I'm sorry to see you selling off that tank so soon after buying it from me. It also hurts to see you selling it so cheap. You are definitely taking a hit. Your prices are way to low. I paid double what you are asking for the tank and stand when I purchased it, $3,000, in fact I made payments on the thing until it was paid off before I brought it home. I paid a lot more for the skimmer. If you look on the Euroreef website the Eheim upgrade is your asking price. All of the Eheim pumps were brand new when I bought it and only ran for about 3 weeks. Euroreef told me in an email that to replace that skimmer, as is, would cost $6,500 plus freight shipping.

  7. I've had some interest but no follow through. It is getting closer and closer to laying down on the rock work, when that happens we won't be able to remove it as easily as we can now. It just laid down an entire rim of new eyes since the last post. So about 60 more eyes just appeared.

Come on folks, normally you all jump at a chance to spend $100 an eye on a chalice. This one has about 1,000 eyes, so hey that's about 30 cents an eye. You can't beat a deal like that. Who wouldn't jump at the chance to brag at their friends that they got a show piece discounted $99.70 per eye?

Ok I'm going to beat that even. Since I just really need this coral to go away I'm going to lower the price to $250. You know in your heart of hearts that you'd be paying that much for a piece a quarter the size of this one at the local shops and you'd have to beg for it from the Tek's main display. Also I will entertain your best offers in PM's.

Get it before my hammer comes out and smashy smashy.

  8. I need your help in removing this very large show piece from my tnak. Indeed it has grown far to large for me. It has overgrown several of my smaller pieces, shading and stinging them into a skeletal submission. I guarantee the 8" is not a misrepresentation, nor an exaggeration as I placed a tape measure within the tnak to check it. Currently it appears to only be supported by about a 1/4" stem on a rock. I grew this from a single eye that Stoneroller accidentally bumped from his mother colony while making frags. I swear it was no larger than the drop of glue I used to place it with. If I can recall correctly this piece has been growing for about 2 years now. If you have a large tnak this coral can instantly be your centerpiece. If you look closely at the pictures you will see the single eye that I started with right in the center of the coral. I am extremely proud of the very concentric patterns of growth. Online prices vary from about $30-90 an inch square. Shipping on a coral like this would be very expensive and online retailers like selling high volumes of small frags, hence it is difficult to find show pieces. I would guess online would be about $350 for the piece and about $80 shipping.

I'm asking $300 but I will entertain offers. No swaps or trades today. Sorry. I have 8 heavily grown out frags that are just waiting for the real estate as it is. I will toss in a few yellow paly's for you and maybe a PPE. There is another piece that I bought about a year and a half ago. It was sold to me as a northern lights chalice, I can't tell the difference. It is about 4"x3". I'll let it go for $75 just to make room in the tnak.

I have lots and lots of yellow paly's to thin out. Clumps of 5-10 for $15? Also on the fraggable list are genuine PPE, Kryptonite candy canes, warp speed montipora, and some Elk Horn coral. I will also consider selling my extremely large double plated scroll coral. The scroll would be a bit difficult to remove so we would need to figure out a plan. I might even give up a 6" pagoda cup coral since some of the yellow paly's and duncans have been stinging the edges of the pagoda. Basically my tank is overgrown and I've got to start making room in there for others to grow out. I'm not one to frag as I like my corals big, now that they are big, changes are necessary.

Here are some pictures of the show piece, and the paly's. There is a complete tnak shot so you can see the environment they are growing in.

*Warning* This is my disclaimer. I have not done a water change in about a year and a half. I have not run a skimmer in about 8 months. I have been using untreated and unfiltered tap water for about 7 months. There are no creepy crawlies anywhere within my tnak. I am very happy with the success of the tnak over the last year and a half and you will be to.

  9. I sold off my RO/DI unit about 6 months ago when I sold off another tank of mine. It's been 6 months on city tap water, zero water changes in at least a year, no feedings in about 4 months or so, and I can promise you that my tank has never looked better. Basically I was seeing a little hair algae and I was considering selling the tank anyways so I just stopped taking care of it and instead of getting worse, it got much better. Oh and did I mention that I turned off my skimmer at about the same time I started using tap water? My SPS all look great and my LPS that just wouldn't grow have started taking off. In fact I have an 8" diameter Hollywood stunner chalice I need to sell since it's been growing faster than I can keep up with and it's long stingers killed a few other SPS. Zoas that never grew are thriving and multiplying. I swear the less I mess with the tank, the better it becomes.

    So let me recap,

    City water for make up

    absolutely no skimmer

    absolutely no water changes

    no feedings

    Excellent growth and colors.

I will take some pictures in the next day or so and post them up. Only problem with pictures is you will still argue that I am lying and I can't possibly be using city water and not running a skimmer.

  10. hmmmm I remember having this conversation before and a few people said that power outages were no big deal and I was being over cautious having a generator for the tank. I've only been without power for about 20-30 mins at a time so I haven't fired up the generator yet.

Here was the previous discussion, maybe there are some tips to help people

    http://www.austinree...h__1#entry88994

Yep and I was that ******* that argued against them, and again I was right.

I actually had 3 people calling me freaking out from this forum and a direct result of this thread this morning while I was at work. They were freaked and asked me if I was serious that I wouldn't be worried about a few hours of no electricity. I said not to worry and that I bet the power wouldn't be off for more than an hour. I haven't had anyone call me back to pay up, hey come to think of it, I have a few calls to make myself....

    I stand by my argument.

Today in Egypt mass hysteria caused people to think that the police were coming in as plains clothes officers, several hundred people wounded because of that idea. Mass hysteria has a way of getting people caught up in the moment. Sometimes you just need to step back, take a calm look at things and relax.

How many of you called your Boss today to tell em you couldn't come to work today cause you have to babysit your tnak? Sissies. I'm fully engaged with a losing battle with Influenza but I made it to work today.

Anyways live in fear if you want........

  11. I would never add a coral to my tank if I dipped and found AEFW. Just recently a fellow reefer was over and offered up some sps frags. During the diping process I found AEFW and gave the coral back. No way no how I'm adding a coral that just had AEFW, way too big of a risk IMO.

Has someone contacted Vivid about this yet? I'd think long and hard before ordering from these guys again.

That's why I only buy my corals from Fishypets. Really great shop down south. The employees are friendly and helpful.
