...using an Eheim canister filter with only the filter pads inside. Should I be using carbon or something else as well?
The effect that the carbon has on your tank will depend on the brand/grade of carbon you get. I know countless people who really use pretty standard, low grade carbon MOST of the time, but never see any ill effects even if they forget to change it, showing it isn't terribly effective. On the bright side, the higher grade carbon typically prescribes a smaller quantity per gallon, so though it's more expensive - you really get what you pay for & it should stretch out for a good while. Just make sure you're changing it as the manufacturer directs, otherwise it's possible to have a negative effect if it goes too long expired (some suggest changing it within 8-12 days, some suggest 3 weeks - depends on the brand).
The only other point to address is: how effective have other people found the use of carbon when introduced to a canister filter? I know that some articles written on carbon insist that you simply submerge the carbon in a calm & safe area of your sump, and that you do NOT put it somewhere that directs or forces water to pass through it. The reasoning is typically that you don't NEED to force the flow through the carbon (in fact, carbon-reactors require very little flow, as its more effective with more contact time), and also that the higher grade carbons are pretty fine & delicate. Putting a bag of it in a stronger current can cause the carbon to rub together and break down, generating dust. If at all possible, I'd say cinch your rocky media in the canister over, to create a sloped nook to it's top, this way you can drop the load of carbon there, rather than evenly spreading it across as an entire layer, the diameter of the whole canister (hope that makes sense).

Here are pics, as promised.
That's the best I can manage, esp considering the picture of the crack. I don't have a lot of room to maneuver the aquarium, and since I don't have anyone to help me try to move it, that's all I was able to get.
Hope it helps.

email sent about the 55 gal drum/reservoir with heater & pump installed
Sold to you - thanks.
can u get a pic of the tank include a chipped/cracked area?...pm me on that....thanks
Yeah, I'll try to get a picture of it tomorrow.
Whatever is still sitting around will be put on CL on Weds/Thurs. If I have to, as of this weekend, I'll part it out into smaller pieces - but I'd really rather it all go at once.

Selling my bosses set-up, I broke it down for him about two weeks ago and stuck it in my garage since he lives on the outskirts of town & didn't wanna deal with tirekickers on the deal. Text/call/e-mail for quickest communication, as I have my phone on me 24/7, and don't often get online. I drive tiny cars, and work 7 days a week, so everything would have to be picked up from my garage - no deliveries possible.
48x24x25" reef ready aquarium
- has a chip/crack on a corner, no longer a perfect display, but has held water fine for him the past year or so. Would make a great large sump, or set-up/frag tank.
$-make offer
Ocean View stained oak stand & canopy w/upper & lower surrounding trim to frame tank
- 2x Coralife 150w DE's & 2x 48" actinics installed into the canopy, with a pair of fans as well. Actinics are about 8 months old, MH bulbs are 2 months old, and were run 6hrs a day. One or two Coralife dual timer powerstrips also included.
- Stand & canopy's wood is in really great shape, just less than 2yrs old, hinges could use replacing for ease of operation.
$585
Sump & equipment
- Eshopps 200 or 250 acrylic sump, MAG 9.5, one or two 300w heaters, Coralife 125 skimmer
$250
55 gal drum/reservoir with heater & pump installed
- grey drum with heater and pump installed inside, to mix saltwater for water changes, or top of reservoir. Pump was strong enough to feed the tank about 12-15ft away when last used.
$40
Or come get absolutely everything (including the tank) for $800. I'd really prefer to sell everything all at once to get it out of my garage (though my boss is in no hurry for the cash T_T), so don't be shy.

in Want to Buy
Randy at river cityThanks for the referral
It's just a shame I sold both of them (for a total steal ~_~ ) a week ago in SA. If I hear of anyone with one available, I'll post up about it.
-
shipping is an option at buyers expense, as long as payment is received up front. in fact, if I have to sit on these for too long, I'll be forced to list them on non-local CraigsList or ebay T_T
PM for further details if you'd like to purchase any.

Selling off my marine/aquarium book collection and the only 2 Coral Magazines I could find in storage. ALL the books are 100% brand new, never read, never flipped through, only stored, with the exception of The Reef Aquarium V.3 (flipped through the first few chapters) and average shelf wear on the spine of Reef Fishes V.1 due to it being a soft-cover. As such, I'm selling them all near what you'd pay on Amazon.com for the new book, but without shipping obviously, as I paid sticker price for each and every one of them originally Also, FWIW the Marine Atlas books are the 2005 editions.
The Reef Aquarium Volume Three $45
Aquarium Sharks & Rays $30
Reef Fishes: Basslets, Dottybacks & Hawkfishes $30
Reef Fishes: Angelfishes & Butterflyfishes $34
Reef Fishes Volume One $50
Marine Atlas 1 $40
Marine Atlas 2 $40
Marine Atlas 3 $45
(all 3 MA'a for $115)
Giant Clams in the Sea and the Aquarium $40
Aquarium Corals $30
Reef Invertebrates $40
Coral Magazine Volume 4 Number 2 LARGE REEF AQUARIUMS $3
Coral Magazine Volume 4 Number 3 GREAT BARRIER REEF $3
I can meet within the Austin area. If there are interested parties in San Antonio, I can have them taken down by my girlfriend, who can meet anyone to do the exchange in the UTSA Blvd area. Multiple book package discounts available

randy how many jugs you have left... ill take them all from you!!!
Thanks Adrian, pulled em off the list and holding onto them for you.

UPDATE:
I'll add more to this list as I find things, as well as remove things from the list as they sell. And sorry, I don't have pics of any of this stuff, because I don't have a digital camera.
SMS122 pH Monitor brand new(missing pH pen) $40
5gal aquarium jugs $2/ea lidless (3-4 left) or $3/ea with lid (2-3 left)
12gal Nano Cube DX (only one working light) GONE
IceCap 660 ballast with wiring harness $120
IceCap 660 ballast missing fuse + harness $90
Both 660's for $190
Current Dual Satellite 20" w/Dual Daylight + Dual Actinic $35
Coralife 4.75" Retro-fit cooling fans for canopies $20/ea (2 left)
Can meet in a wide area around Austin on Mon + Weds + Sun; any other day I'd have to do the deal at work in the evening. I really need this stuff gone, though.
I still prefer e-mail be used for contact, but since a lot of people seem to refuse to follow through w/that I cleared out space for 5 PM's in my inbox. I also keep getting e-mails that simply ask me if something is still available, but without legit interest in buying. I'd rather avoid those types of messages, thanks.
-
Tried to send you a response pm but you message box must be full.
oh, yeah, I don't mess with my PM's much - email me at [email protected]

Hey Randy,
I am looking forward to getting 7 of the 5gal water jugs/lids from you tomorrow. It's time was another water change... hoot, hoot
Derek
DONE! Thanks man
And for anybody in SA (though this is AUSTIN Reef Club, I know) I'm heading down there tomorrow, so if you're interested in anything, let me know and I can bring it down

Paid a huge bill this week, and ran out of money afterwards, so I gotta push some stuff FS now to re-coop. I'll add more to this list as I find things, as well as remove things from the list as they sell. And sorry, I don't have pics of any of this stuff, because I don't have a digital camera.
SMS122 pH Monitor brand new(only missing pH pen) $50
5gal water jugs $2/ea lidless, $3/ea with lid (between 12-16 available)
12gal Nano Cube DX (only one working light) $50
IceCap 660 ballast with wiring harness $125
IceCap 660 ballast missing fuse + harness $100
Both 660's for $200
Current Dual Satellite 20" w/Dual Daylight + Dual Actinic $35
I'll be in SA from Sun-Tues, so I'll be unavailable at that time.
I don't get on the computer often, so I don't get to check my PM's much. Please e-mail me instead at [email protected] to discuss anything or ask any questions. Thanks.

I've got two of these for sale, one's complete w/fuse and wiring harness ($130) while the other one is lacking the fuse and wiring harness ($100). From what I've been told by a few of my customers who are a lot more wire-friendly than I am, this is a very cheap and easy fix. To be honest, I wouldn't know. I just have changed my plans, and no longer have any use for these. I dont get on too often, so please email me at: oovwoo at gmail dot com

We're cleaning out and re-starting the liverock tank here up at the shop, I just got the thing drained and I'm going to start cleaning out the mud at the bottom (about 2" deep across the bottom of a 72x18" tank bottom). At the end of the night, I'm throwing it all away, so if you drop by today, have a bag or two.
see www.RiverCityAquatics.com for address if you've never been by.

I know that River City has DT's.
This is true, but in the case that they want to culture their own, I'd suggest talking to Bmwaaron - he's buddies with "Melev" and raises his own for his tank too.
-
PMed ya about my 30G setup.
30 gal? What happened to 15 gal?
I wont thread-jack, PM me maybe, Winnie?

Looking for complete system to get started. First saltwater tank. I've been researching and learning. Ready to buy and need a good price. 55 gallon minimum.
Thanks
I've got a 100 gallon system I put together and never used (other than
leak-testing) that is up for sale. If you're interested in buying just the
set-up, and aren't looking for something that is established - with
liverock / corals / fish, then let me know (it wasn't entirely clear from
the original post).
I haven't figured out the price I'm looking to get from it, but it's a
60"x18"x20" 100 gallon tank with 30" tall stand and 10" tall canopy (both
pine). 1 overflow box and 1 closed loop drain (1" bulkheads) w/ 5 .75"
returns drilled through the back glass (4 of which are randomized w/
SCWD's). 40 gallon sump, mag-drive pumps, and a skimmer rated for 250
gallons, as well as your choice of 2x250w HQI DE lighting or 2x250w mogul
lighting (I have both, everything brand new except the DE pendants) as
well as optional 4x56w T5 actinic set-up.
If you're into that sorta thing, let me know, and I'll crunch some numbers.
-
I didn't know Ezra drilled tanks but I'll second that he is a really stand up guy.
I agree w/Ezra. Least complicated route too, as all stores involved with drilling will feel on edge about liability issues, where-as somebody who does it on the side; more regularly; will be more comfortable doing it

I need:
Vol 1 Num 3 (Lionfish)
Vol 3 Num 4 (Coral Sexual Propigation)
Vol 3 Num 5 (FrogFish)
Vol 3 Num 6 (Gorgonians)
New or used. Will pay $10 each
Hey Andrew, just wanted to let you know we've got all of those you're looking for (sans the Lionfish - that's a bit old ) @ $6.95 a pop. Hope that helps.

What sizes are the frogspawns and torches(how many heads)? I also had another question. Would you ever get the chance to order Picasso Clowns?
As far as I know, the Picasso's aren't something that pop up as available from our regular distributors; but Carlos'll have to confirm that. Only odd-ball clowns I ever see here & there that we can order in are the Onyx Percula & Naked Ocellaris.
All the Euphillia's we've got on hand right now are between 2-7 heads, a majority of them are 3-4 head colonies. The Ric's are sick (in a good way, always hard to tell when typing), one's blue w/orange and green on it, the other is a mixture of green colors, and the last one is this slate blue face w/the goldy red hues on it's bubbles. Also had a nice Acro (Samoensis maybe?) come in as well. The Blasto's look pretty good too, for all that were oogling the red's @ the meeting this weekend
Adrian: Glad to hear it, man - thanks for the support & kind words! I can't wait to see some updated pics with the Vermiculate Leopard in your herd of tangs Best of luck with him.

Anyone have pictures of the best Brown SPS they have got that turned into one of your favorites?
Ill post a picture of mine when I can get a good picture of it.
Mine is a 1 inch brown milli that has turned into a Turquoise base with blue tips
Bah humbug, I prefer the ones that turn brown happy4.gif LOL
Truthfully, mine's probably the pink w/blue polyps Seriatopora that we dropped in the nano at the store. I scrapped that off the bottom of one of our coral tanks (it was supposed to be on the racks) and it was the last BN frag that my buddy had traded in here at the store, but after about a month of sitting around here and browning out, a little TLC up front gave some booming growth and serious color.

Thanks for the kind words, guys. To be honest, nothing in our display tank is cherry picked. The Crocea clam was just a random grab out of one of our very first marine orders around 2 years ago, and has been living in our nano displays since day 1. My Silver/Pink Maxima was just a random clam I happened to win at a raffle at MACNA last year. The Pom-Pom Xenia, Pink+Blue Birdsnest, (x-tra long) Green Star Polyp, 2 types Mushroom, and 2 Zoo varieties were all donated from customers, many of which were originally purchased here anyway. As an employee, I'm not allowed to cherry pick things for my own tank that enter the store as retail pieces either, and I have to give things a 3 day chance to sell to the customers before I can snatch it up, so I wouldn't call the 4 Zoo varieties I threw in top picks (not in their original form, at least, they've just colored up really nicely). And the rest of the corals in there? Sometimes I find a piece here and there that has 3-5 polyps on it, drifting around a coral tank, so I drop it in to see if it'll cling anywhere and take off, or if a coral's been here for way too long for as much of a looker as it is, then I take mercy on it and give it a new home in the tank up front. Just thought I'd shed some light about how we stock our tank

You guys are seriously discounting Genicanthus from what you guys are dubbing as Angels. I understand what draws most people to want Angels in the first place is some of the colors on some Centropyge or Pomacanthus, and that the Genicanths are less vibrant/varied in color, but they should still be considered. I'd rather keep a fish that was more compatible for my system, than risk putting one in that may endanger my corals just to get a specific color into the tank. I do have many friends who've kept Centropyge Argi long term with no coral damage, for what that's worth - but their smaller size seems to be a turn off for some people, though they do have purple & orange somewhat like a Coral Beauty.
You can read plenty on Genicanths here: http://www.wetwebmedia.com/marine/fishes/angels/genicanthus/faqs.htm
