  1. Interesting. With the BRS group buy, I purchased a 5 gallon bucket of carbon, but I got the fine which was supposed to be more efficient. I didn't realize exactly how small the pieces would be. About what size is the purigen particles? I'm now worried that this carbon wouldn't stay put in the reactor if you had problems with Purigen even with a fine mesh screen.
  2. I was looking at that particular model. It seems to be the most widely used and is competitively priced. The only downside I see is that I have to add another pump to my system to utilize the reactor. If it dramatically increased the efficiency and utilization of my carbon, then it would be worth it in the long run. If it is only a slight gain / no gain from having it in my bubble trap, I just can't see myself changing just to add another pump / moving part! I can't find any studies / data that note the differences between reactor / mesh bag.
  3. I agree, I usually get a small spike due to the same thing. I have even seen this before when I only filled up a glass to check the TDS with the handheld before I upgraded to the inline meter.
  4. So I've never owned a media reactor before and have always used a mesh bag when I add carbon to my system. I just let the bag sit in the bubble trap of my sump. Is this efficient or will I get longer life and better utilization of my carbon by using a media reactor? Anyone have a preferred reactor? I just wanted to spark a conversation around this as it has crossed my mind a few times.
  5. That is good to hear. This has always been one of the fish on my want list but I'm a bit weary for my inverts + my tank is an open top and from what I've read wrasses are notorious for jumping.
  6. Hey, how is the fish working out? Has it gone for any livestock in the tank (snails, crabs, shrimp)?
  7. Still available if anyone is interested.
  8. It really depends on the fish you plan to keep. I have LumenBrights on my tank that are in a hanging rack over my 180 gallon. The top is completely open. I have had only one fish jump out and that was one that I later found out was notorious for jumping out. The other 18 fish of mine are fine with no issues. As long as the water quality is good, they seem to stay in it!
  9. Just FYI the Tunze 6085 isn't controllable with the Tunze controllers.
  10. I saw the Oceanic Illuminata at Aquatek. I had to take multiple looks at it. I also like the rimless look. The negatives though: it is too tall for my tastes and the width / depth is only 18". If it was at least 24", I think it would catch on quick. Also don't remember correctly, but I don't think it had the high clarity glass, but could of been wrong. Overall nice looking tank but would change the dimensions. I've never personally owned a glasscages tank but I've heard good things about them related to being solid. The only negatives I've heard is the silicone finish quality. I don't mind some extra silicone when it comes to gallons of water in my house! They also have great dimensions to pick from.
  11. I have two Tunze 6105s and two Tunze 6055s on my 180 gallon. They're controlled by the 7096 controller. I don't have personal experience with the Vortechs, but went with the Tunze because every other product they make has worked exceptionally for me. I also like the fact that Roger is just down the street IF I do have any issues. My corals definitely enjoyed the upgrade and I haven't had any trouble with them. Overall I'm satisfied.
  12. I just used the standard durso on all the tanks I've owned. I would say mine is relatively silent. Like stated above I had to enlarge the hole. I also believe it had to do with my return pump and volume. In some of my initial tank setups, I had a substantial amount of flow through the sump, thus the overflow had to keep up with this. More flow, the louder it was. After reading a few articles on Melevs site, I went with the recommended ~3-5x flow through the sump. As a result of that, the overflow wasn't as loud as the volume was minimal. What return pump are you using on your 40 gallon?
  13. I will not be at the meeting due to a family engagement already scheduled for the weekend.
  14. I did a bulk buy of this since I found it online. Picture should answer all questions. Note that this is the good stuff since it is DRIED, not Roasted. Asking $3 each. I have eight packages available. First Come First Served.
  15. Here is a closeup of the writing on both. It didn't say specifically if it is cast or extruded, so unable to provide a definite answer.
  16. I'm not sure. I purchased this from Regal Plastics in Austin. I let the guy know exactly what I was building and this is what he recommended to use. Since it still has the backing on the acrylic I will snap an up close picture of the labeling this evening and hopefully that will answer the question.
  17. Still available for a sump project!
  18. Mitch, Did they provide a price list for the "Group Buy" prices? When we log in on Tuesday will we see this updated "Group Buy" prices?
  19. I have four pieces of acrylic (1/4") laying around from previous projects: 48" x 52" - $40 48" x 14" - $10 33" x 18.5" - $10 12" x 12" - Free with purchase of item Let me know if you're interested.
  20. If the product ships immediately, then it shouldn't if all 10 people didn't place an order by the cutoff. In my opinion, if they ship my order immediately then it will be billed immediately and it best get the bulk price. I bet they make sure all individuals has registered with them prior to opening it up, but I still don't see how they can regulate all those individuals placing orders if they ship product immediately after an individual places an order.
