  1. Dave, FYI I just ordered a pacific coast recirculating skimmer for my 100g http://www.aquadirect.com/store/product.ph...=879&page=1 Price: $219.90 I believe they are the same manufacture as octopus.
  2. bananags: your situations sounds something like mine as my son is almost 7 months old. I ordered a pacific coast recirculating skimmer, 2 little fishies phosban reactor (with a maxijet 400), 2 rio 50's for auto top-off and mixing pump. single overflow at 800gph, and a mag 9 return pump.
  3. hmm rather then dealing with a syphon overflow.. maybe i'll get my tank drilled. does any of the LFS drill?
  4. Rather then using an overflow to suck water down into the sump/refugium, do you think it would be better to use a pump? hmm probably not.. you'd have to sync both the return pump and the "overflow" pump...
  5. Headless donkey, I found a J Tube overflow from aquadirect (much better prices then marinedepot). is this similar to what you are recommending? http://www.aquadirect.com/store/product.ph...=546&page=1 Also, i found a pacific coast imports recirculating protein skimmer (up to 185g) for the same price as the euro reef RS 135. any thoughts on this manufacturer or skimmer? Thanks, -Dan
  6. chatfouz, so you recommend a weaker pump? also, I was also planning closed loop system, but haven't designed it yet. this initial setup is more for filtration and not circulation. I've seen a lot of people talk about phosban reactors w/ activated carbon and also running UV filters. Do you think these are necessary for water clarity and lower nitrite/ate levels? should I plan to add these units in the future for my filtering system?
  7. Good Evening everyone, Now that I have my 100g tank and my new stand almost finished, I'm planning on buying some equipment in the coming week. And wanted to see what everyone thought. My sump/refugium will approximately be 30 gallons. 1) Euro Reef RS 135 (500gph?) - in sump only. return line will also be in sump. 2) CPR CS100 Overflow (800gph) 3) Mag 9.5 (950gph, but with head loss, it will be closer to 800gph) - Return Pump Do you think I have the overflow and the return pump balanced enough? TIA -Dan
  8. GKarshens, yes the 2x6 is resting on a 2x4 along with 2 back supports. Thanks for posting your pictures. Did you install any vertical support in the center?
  9. Thanks, I appreciate your input in the design, as i am going to start building this weekend. I just wanted it to be safe for my 6 month old
  10. Entropy, I've upated the image to give a better detail of the corner structure. I've been getting a few comments like "i've seen houses built with less wood" in other forums.. and my brother is telling me I need to use a 2x8 for that long open front.
  11. yes it will all be wrapped in plywood, except the front, which is going to be open for the doors.
  12. Would this frame provide enough strength for a 100 gallon tank?
  13. Melev, Maybe in a couple years you all can stop by my house (as I am still in the purchasing equipment phase of my new 100g tank). I've been reading melevsreef.com over and over, for 2 years now. Finally inspired me to set up my first marine aquarium. Enjoy your time on the tour! -Dan
  14. Oh yes, i'm interested. PM me with a price.
  15. I've come across conflicting sizes for the coralife 125 skimmer. some websites say that it is 33 inches while others say it's only 24 1/2. Can anyone verify this? as my stand is only 27 inches tall.
  16. Ok cool, thanks for the info. I am currently looking at the Corallife brand as the euro reef is a little out of my price range. Now i just need to figure out how big my sump is going to be -Dan
  17. When you buy a skimmer for your tank, so you need to take in the sump size as well? or just the tank? TIA -Dan

    Evening

Hi CaptainBob, I just Aquatek this weekend and had a look around. Any idea on how long the LR is going to be $4/lb? Yes, I have read about DIY concrete rocks. Not to sure how I feel about putting concrete in my tank. I have tossed around the Idea of seeding dead rock with a few pieces of LR. Has anyone tried this? How much LR vs DR is needed to seed properly?

    Evening

Evening everyone. I've been fresh water keeping for about 6 years now and have an excellent 30 gallon tank with an angel that lays eggs almost every week. BUT, I've decided (with the wifes permission) to embark on a new salt water adventure. I've been reading about salt water keeping on and off for about 2 years and i'm finally going to take the plunge. I'm picking up my new tank on wednesday and hopefully, I'll have it all bought and put together by this fall. The one thing that gets me, is the shear cost of Live Rock. Is it possible to make some life rock, while I'm putting my setup together? I was thinking about buying a little kids swimming pool, mixing some salt water and placing a few power heads in it and let it steep for a few months. Would that work? What type of rock is best for marine tanks? Oh and Hi to everyone in South Austin! Thanks In Advance -Dan
