  1. Well alot has happened since the last time i posted a blog, the 90g corner bowfront was sold leaving me with just the 8g boicube. Well my roommate picked up a 29g cube so my coral were moved to that tank.

Last night I picked up a 55g complete setup for $300 on craigslist, this tank has 2 skimmers, sump, stand, orbit light (4 65w pc's), hob overflow, powerheads, rock, sand...well you get the point. Apparently he had some nice coral till his tank temp got to 35 (non insulated house) and killed most of everything in the tank. When i picked the tank up it had a bad problem w/ hair algae however i only spotted 2 snails and 1 hermit crab. So today i got 30 hermits, 20 snails, and 2 sea hares (1 will leave once the algea is under control). Also included are 2 clownfish and a yellow tank. The clownfish are rather big and are hosting a small anemome...but look very healthy and happy at the moment.

  2. Does the tank have internal overflows?

Can you provide more information on the wave maker? What model?

    Thanks

yes the tank has internal overflows, once I get back to the house I'll post up equipment specs. For those who are sent me pm's about parting out- Sorry for $450 for the complete setup I will not part it out. You can buy this setup for $450 and the tank and stand are still worth more!

  3. will you part out the tank and stand only and how much you like them for, thanks

I really don't want to part the system out...but I'll make a even better deal!

Thats right $450 (this isn't a typo) you get all the equipment!! I really doubt you will find another good deal like this...don't sit and pass it up!

Im currently saving my money so I can pick up one of these beutiful tanks up (the one I want uses crystal glass). Hopefully in the next 2 months I can pick one of these tanks up set it up.

  6. I purchased a Black Volitan Lionfish about 2 weeks back, he is still in the QT tank (my fish sit in QT for a month before transferring them to their main tank). I've noticed a spot that started to form, it looks as if his skin is coming off...I can see the tan where the spots have formed. After 2 days these spots went from the size of barley noticable to the size of quaters...it started on one side and is now on both sides. After some research all I can come up with is Uronema Marinum as what he may be sick with. However I wanted to try and confirm and get the best idea's on treatment for him are.

I've enclosed a 2 pics, these pics are from 2 days ago (the spots have doubled in size).

(o this lion is an adult, very large).

  7. Lurker, if you time it right, you could visit town when our club is having its monthly meeting. Got a real name?

    Thanks for the nice words.

Real name is Kevin, I will look forward to visiting family/friends/ and fellow out of city reefers :-).

  8. I thought I'd introduce myself. I've had an account on this board for a while, but can't recall the last time I'd posted to it. I tend to post the most on Reef Central and DFWMAS, but stray out occasionally to see what I'm missing.

My 280g reef is about to turn 3 years old, and here is a FTS (full tank shot) from the first of August.

I have a huge skimmer, large refugium, bigger sump, external return pump, VorTech & Tunze pumps, MH lighting and an Auto Top off to keep the reef happy, and a window a/c unit to keep the fishroom cool so I don't need a chiller. :)

Hello, :-) Im grew up in North Richland Hills and Haltom City, I travel once a month to Ft. Worth to visit family and friends. Love your tank

  9. I've decided to keep everyone up to speed on my small reef tank keeping...big thanks to Captian Bob for pointing me in the right directions!

So here is my 8g Bio Cube Reef

  10. James

I am down with some DIY stuff. In fact I have had great success with an auto top-off I built for around 20 bucks.

I am currently putting together a custom nano cube that I assembled from the ground up - all acrylic. I would be

glad to share with the club on some of these topics. I guess we will have to see what or if anyone is interested.

If I have the ability to make something I usually do I enjoy the satisfaction. Here is a picture of the cube.

    James D

I think 2 good topics would be:

    - how to prepar for a Emergancy!

    - DIY (ie-making equipment to simple plumbing)

  11. Yet another lesson from a newbie: put your rocks in a "mountain" so that all levels are exposed to the light and you can get the top higher. I would think this would be common sense, but I'm apparently missing that gene. :) I put mine it a straight line across the tank. Now I'm having a hard time placing mushrooms and zoos where they'll be directly in the light and the top of the pile is level across the middle of the tank. So.....next water change I'll have to do a slight rescaping.

Looking at some of the nanos, it appears that the back side of the mountain, top to bottom, is against the back wall and then the front and sides slope out. Sort of a right triangle shape. My question is, do I put the rocks against the back wall of the tank?

I just picked up a 8g Nano, my live rock is in a moutain shape, however I left the back side open. In short I did a mountain (I am attaching a file, this is a quick ms paint that shows how I have set my rock up).

  12. ooohh... If I had a garage I'd want that just for the sake of having it, but all the driving I do it'd cost as much to keep gas in that truck as it would to make payments on a new Tacoma... that and my white trash neighbors would no doubt screw with a pretty old truck like that as soon as they saw it left unattended in my parking lot :)

thanks for the offer though :)

if your looking for a car, I'll look around...I have plenty of friends who are selling. PM me w/ the max you would like to spend and I'll see what I can pull :-).

If you would also like to rebuild your engine/trans or get them replaced...I can get probably get you a decent deal.

  13. That's a great idea.

    Love to see the pics.

What type of hose did you use?

What about using just a mini freezer?

    Man, you got me thinking.

The mini freezer would work great, however u don't want to freeze the water flowing through the hose. The hose I am picked up is very thin (think 3/4 in). I'll bug the girlfriend for the pics in the morning. In total I think I spent $120 on everthing, not bad for a temp/back up chiller. :-)

  14. After spending all my pay check on getting some new equipment I was looking for a fast way (besides fans) to bring down my water temps in my 92g fish only tank (temp was at 83 and I wanted it to be at least 75-78).

After reading a few threads on RC I decided to give mine a shot. My first plan was to stop by Walmart and Lowes! At walmart I picked up a mini fridge, they have a few from $70-$200, now mind you the small ones can work but you will be running them full blast the whole time. I ended up picking up this one as its got alot of room inside to work with. My next stop landed me at Lowes and picked up 40 feet of hose, this hose will be curled inside the fridge (the longer the hose the cooler the water passing through will get).

So now I have the mini fridge and 40feet of hose and a pump (I don't know what kind but I used it as a return from a sump on a 30g). Take the mini fridge and drill 2 holes large enough to fite the hose (I put 1 hole entering into the freezer section and the other hole was on the side (bottom portion). Now it really doesn't matter where you put the holes that is a personal preferance. I then dropped my pump in the sump and ran all my hose from the pump through the fridge (i have 18 curls in the freezer section and the rest are in the fridge) and back out to the sump. Turn on the pump and make sure you don't have any kind of kinks in your hose, then turn your fridge on. It took me 2 days to get the temp to where I want, now my temps of my tank stay at 77 (with the fridge settings only on 5).

This was my temp solution till my next paycheck, however with so many tanks in the house this lil mini chiller will be seeing alot of use. I'll try to post pics as soon as I get my camera back.
