  1. The one on South Congress is called Rivers and Reefs.... but just forget about it... it shouldn't have the word "reefs" in the name. Totally lame store.

River City Aquatics is worth the drive. I think they have the best livetock in town. Once Kingfish opens I will go there too. John's got a great setup in there.

  2. You can just have some. It grows so fast I'll always have more than I need. I have a frag with probably 12+ stalks - Anthelia is one polyp per stalk unlike xenia. It's mounted on some aragonite so it's easy to superglue. Let me know.

  3. I've got some pink Anthelia you could have. I got a small frag from Robert (Hammondegge) a year ago and it's going crazy. It doesn't pulse like Xenia but they are related. It has individual stalks unlike Xenia. Anyways, I've got a frag or two if you want it.

This is only one of the places it has spread.

  4. Remember, the plural form of Octopus is actually "Octopuses", or you can say "Octopodes" (very rare use). Octopi is not correct. Just a little tip for when you do get some!

They are amazing creatures and would love to see the tank when it's up!

  5. No I didn't powder coat it. Instead I applied two coats of metal primer and three coats of protective enamel. Plenty of protection!

Powder coating costs an arm and leg... and since I spent only $40 for the steel I decided against it. The enamel will hold up great.

  6. So I figured my tank is finally ready to be seen in public.

I moved to Austin a year ago from Florida. Back in FL I had a 180g mixed reef, a 90g sps and a 50g frag tank. Obviously these would have been a tremendous pain in the *** to move 1200 miles, not to mention impossible to setup in a 3rd floor apt.

I considered a 40g breeder as a new tank. I like the dimensions of the 40, but I was looking for something better. I designed a custom tank and had Miracles In Glass out of Canada build it. It is a 35g (18x24x18) with 1/2" Starfire panels and euro bracing. There is an external overflow on the back with 2x 1" drains.

I had the horrible task of getting rid of about 80% of my livestock before moving... corals, fish, inverts, equipment, etc. After a big aquarium garage sale, I was down to an acceptable amount.

The move went well, only lost a bubble coral. I triple-bagged everyone in 4mil bags. Since you cannot get oxygen in FL without a prescription, I went to a dive shop and got the most O2-saturated bottle of Nitrox I could find. For those who dive regularly, you know what Nitrox is. I found a bottle with 42% O2 and used that to inflate the bags. Then into coolers and a 19 hour drive straight through to Austin.... FUN!

    Onto the photographs:

It's hard to see but there are two separate rocks here. There's a valley right behind the Kenya Tree and Elegance that runs to the back.

Hmmm. I have like 20 more images. Can we not use HTML in the posts? This way I don't have to attach every photo. :D

  7. I've had about the same results which each of them. The noise is comparable on both. It's been rumored that the Stockman may be able to drain more water, but I can't say for sure. Right now I have a Stockman on one of my drains and it works great. I previously had two dursos, and as I said, the noise differences aren't noticeable, just the size.

  8. Corals bleach for a million reasons. I would point to your nitrates, possibly. 20ppm is alot for a SPS tank.

Also, aren't you supposed to use the Ultralith in combination with the other Zeolite products, and not just by itself? I'm not so familiar with it.

Lastly, what is your temperature and how much does it swing daily? What lights do you have?

  9. I'm sure you know the benefits of researching fish before you buy them.

Leopard Wrasses are considered 'Expert only' by most people, as they eat primarily live foods, ie: amphipods on live rock. I'm sure they can be taught to eat frozen, but this is the risk. Much like Copperband Butterflys or Mandarins.

You can try feeding them a variety of live foods, clams or mussels and feeder shrimp, but unltimately they want live amphipods in the tank to constantly feed on.

Good luck! They're beautiful fish, but picky as ****.

    Oh, I guess H-E-double-hockey-sticks is a banned word :D:)

  10. I've got a 29g All-glass for sale. I used it for a holding tank while I rebuilt my main tank stand, so it was in operation for about 2 months. Very clean, so problems. Basically new.

Not drilled or reef-ready, no strip lights or hood.... just the tank.

    $30

I'm downtown at Riverside and South Congress, but I could meet somewhere.

I am open to trades: Intersting softies or Zoanthids of Indo-pacific origin.

    Thanks.

  11. Both of those tank will be very challenging. The mangroves will be 'easier' to keep alive. I had a pretty good sized mangrove tank in Florida, but I did have access to unlimited mangrove seeds and mud from their natural environment. Contrary to popular belief, they do need more than just a pc light above them. I have a pot of them growing on my balcony under full sunlight. They're less than a year old and about 2 feet tall. Under a metal halide or fluorescents, they'd be about 8-10 inches tall at this point, as they were in my tank back in FL.

Seagrass is another beast. I did collect alot of grass myself, mostly Turtle grass and Manatee grass. I had a terrible time keeping it alive. Sea grass comes from a very dynamic part of the ocean. The water is usually no more than 10-15 feet deep with great surges and flow. I had a 400w MH and lots of flow in a 29g and didn't have much success. I know "Samala" on reef central has some good info on keeping grasses.

If you want true nutrient export, mangroves and grasses are not your best bet. Look into the myriad of macroalgae available. There are some beautiful displays created with just macros.

  12. I've used IO and Red Sea salt for years with no issues.

A few months ago, after talking to john and his success with Tropic marin, I bought a box and I have to say everything in the tank looks great. I'll stick with the Tropic Marin for a while. Especially sine John has it in stock.... gotta support the good guys!

  13. Thanks

Yeah I know where to get them, I have several as it is, many from my childhood. I shoot primarily 16mm and super8 myself. Ebay is good, but shipping on those big 16mm projectors is quite a bit... were talking $50-60 for a $150 projector... too much!

Anyways, I'm asking here just as another outlet.

  14. Anyone have any old film projectors laying around, taking up space, that you'd like to get rid? I'm doing some work with 'old film' aesthetics for graduate school.

    I'm looking for:

    - Super8 w/ or w/o sound

    - Regular 8mm

    - 16mm w/ or w/o sound

I will pay, of course. Let me know!

    Thanks, in advance.
