  1. the crabs might eat at a dead fish but they didn't go rogue and kill it.

the claw dosen't fit. you must aquit !

    ROFLMAO :D

That's good. I hoped it wasn't them because I do need their help with all this bubble algae, but it had been in the back of my mind, wondering.

Yeah, I know fish die for unknown reasons. Bummer that it was the most expensive fish in the tank, but that's about par. Oh well.

  2. My Mystery Wrasse went MIA about a week ago. It took me a few days to realize I wasn't seeing him (my fish hide a lot) and then it clicked that the skimmer had mysteriously gone crazy in that time frame. I have two Emeralds in the tank, one of them is pretty darn big. Do you think one of them may have killed my Mystery? He was probably 3.5" long, but knowing how wrasses like to sleep lying down or buried in the sand, I wondered. I'd had him for at least 6 months. He wasn't sick and everything in the tank seemed to be doing fine. Nothing new added, except the two emeralds in the previous month or so. There's still plenty of bubble algae so they aren't starving.

  3. I recently got two for my 75. I'm kinda overrun with bubble algae. I see one every once in a while. They haven't made much of a dent in the bubble algae, but it's only been a couple of weeks and there really is a bunch of it.

  4. When I read that line, I kinda thought the author was saying it tongue-in-cheek. It does seem unlikely that a coral would be able to aim that way. I knew cobras could, but corals didn't evolve around that many things with eyes and mouths, aside from the fact that they would have to learn to re-calibrate their aim according to the difference between water and air.

  5. And she didn't let the kid go to the hosiptal to be checked out.

That's what makes me angry. Terrible shame about the tank (BTW, I think it was 1500 gallons, not dollars. ) but she not only has her kid bouncing around the vehicle without a seatbelt but doesn't even care to make sure he's okay! :D

  6. You know, I didn't know about the "hate" that was out there about AA, but I had my own problem with Mike after just the first or second time I went there. I can't remember exactly what it was about, but I remember leaving there furious and swearing never to return. It was a beautiful store, but what a horrible businessperson!

I like ARC, Fishy Biz and Aquatek about equally and try to get to all three whenever I have a chance. I haven't been to Rockin Reefs but love the name and want to go see what Mama's got. Until this thread, I didn't know about Austin Aqua Farms but it sounds like I need to check them out too! I used to frequent Partner's when Tim owned it (about 8-10 years ago) and Gallery but haven't been to Partner's much since it changed owners and while I go in Gallery every once in a while, I don't usually find anything to buy unless I'm just there for something like a thermometer or some snails.

  7. Zig zag periwinkle is much more fun to say than fuzzy chiton.

I didn't know emerald crabs got mean. I just added a couple to my tank to help with the bubble algae. What do I have to worry about them picking on? Fish, corals or other CuC members?

  8. I have a complete used T5 setup for a pair of 36" bulbs, including Work Horse 5 solid state ballast, endcaps with standoffs, 36" T5 Actinic 03 bulbs, parabolic reflectors and power cord. I looked up the individual pieces and found that it would cost about $150 if you bought all of them new online not including shipping, so I am asking $75. The bulbs have about 3 months of use.

I also have a black wooden hood for a standard 75G (or 90G? I think they are the same length and width, just taller) with a set of fans mounted on it. The light set up above (with 2 - 36" T5's) used to be mounted on this hood, along with another set of 4 - 48" T5's for a total of 6 bulbs across the whole top. I'd like to get $20 for the hood with the fans but if you want both lights and hood, I'll make you a deal.

    Here are some pics:

Post here or PM me if interested. I will try really hard to make sure I check for PM's here every day.

  9. One thing on the Xenia. It is a very good indicator of PH. I have noticed that if I ever let my PH drop below 8 my xenia shrivels up almost immediately. Anything below 8.2 and it stops "pumping." You might want to check your water parameters?

Thanks Zara! That's a very helpful tip. I'll have to keep a closer watch on my xenia for that.

  10. Those are the polyps and yes, it is a good sign. It is still kinda early to tell how it will do long term though. It will start to lay down a base around the bottom in the next few days/weeks, then it will grow from the ends. Sometimes the ends start to look a different color as they begin to grow.

  11. This may not be the stupidEST thing I've done, but I've done it so often that it gets a cumulative high rank on the stupid list.

Doing a water change, I start taking water out either without turning off the main pump or the auto top off pump so I'm halfway through siphoning into a 5 Gal bucket and the top off starts dumping fresh water into the sump, or the sump pump starts sucking air. So I'm struggling to hold the top of the siphon in the tank, and keep the bottom of it in the bucket while stretching to reach under the tank to switch off the pumps. Why do I do this to myself?

  12. Yes, some people (like me for instance) pay the occasional $20 to buy the bottle of 'pod seeding solution so I can be sure there are enough little critters for my Mandarin to eat. Others just find someone like yourself and borrow or buy some macro-algae or rocks from your tank to transfer the pods that live in them over to their tank.

Definitely consider yourself lucky! Get a Mandarin. They are the most beautiful fish IMO, and they do better when there are live pods for them to feed on.

  13. I was assuming you could set it down in the top off tank, hook up your pump to one end and have a tube going from the other end into your sump. Hook up your pump to float switches and "Bob's your Uncle" there it is. *shrugs* At least I hope that's how it would work.

  14. I was just looking at the ap store for tank maintenance aps and came across (I guess) the one you have, Mark. Is it called iReef or something like that? Works only with the Digital Aquatics ReefKeeper Elite (RKE) controller, right?

I had Aquaria, but it doesn't have a place to list tank inhabitants or even notes. Just water tests and a fish compatibility database. There's a new one called Aquarium Buddy that I just got. I wanted to be able to record the date when I get new fish and corals and this one does that as well as water tests and other notes where you can list events like getting a new piece of equipment or moving the tank or just water changes and supplement additions. I'm surprised there aren't more reef tank maintenance aps for the iPhone. I mean with 85,000+ aps, you'd think there'd be lots.

  15. You're right, clowns *usually* don't like condy's but some will go to anything with tentacles, including corals like frogspawn, elegance, etc.

Are the tentacles long or short? Could you post a pic?

I too am shocked a LFS would sell you an anemone without even being able to tell you what type it is. VERY unusual. Maybe you shouldn't say the name of the store so as not to start a bashing thread, but you could PM it to anyone who asks. Like me, I'm curious.

  16. I don't know as much as some about the spectra produced by any given bulb, but my guess would be yes, especially if the HA started shortly after you introduced the new light. "Real" actinic lights produce the wavelengths they do through the type of gases used inside the bulb, not by a colored filter. Your blue CFL is like a normal fluorescent light shining through a blue filter. It's only the visible blue, not the shorter wavelength light beyond the visible spectrum.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think your blue CFL will make the corals fluoresce (glow) like an actinic does, will it?
