Thanks for the tips, I will try to get an ammonia spike and turn off the heater as well. Not sure how to spike the ammonia in such an established tank but it is worth the effort if I can get this stuff to melt. =-)

It has gotten beyond what weeding can solve. Every piece of LR is at least half covered with the stuff. It is even growing inside the overflows and down-flow tubes... It evidently doesn't need much light to spread.

I have read where otherwise healthy tanks can cause Xenia to completely melt. I want to know your secret! I have a 130 that has had an explosion (over the past 12 months) of Xenia and it is impossible to control. It has gotten to the point where I am considering just taking the tank apart and starting over. First it took over the Zoas and mushrooms. It has now killed all of my SPS and most of my LPS. Do I need to cook the live rock in trashcans in the garage to get rid of this stuff? I hate to take such drastic steps if something as simple as a salinity adjustment can do the trick. I put a couple chocolate chip stars in there and they have an appetite for the Xenia but I would need a dozen of the stars just to keep up with the growth. It has spread to every corner of the tank and the sump as well. The tank has been established for a couple years. It is full of live rock and the tank was growing anything I put in there. I am running a combination of six t5 actinic along with two MH lights. I have tried running without lights for weeks at a time and the "WEED" doesn't care. I am running a 55 gallon sump with a sock, a basketball size bunch of cheato and a 5 inch sand bed. I also have a UV filter but I don’t run it often. (I haven’t turned it on since I established the tank.) I am talking about the flowing xenia, not the pulsing. The flowing took over and killed all of the pulsing... It looked cool at first b/c it added nice movement to the tank but it quickly got out of control. Any suggestions?

Thanks for the stand. It is solid. It looks even better than the pictures. I know whom to call when I need some granite work... You are an artist and you are very good with your hands. You don't see that every day. I hope the pump works out well for you. The Rolex watch needs some cleaning on the band but it keeps decent time and it looks awesome. It even has the authentic Rolex movement. I paid $250 for it but I just don't wear it anymore... Enjoy it or trade it, just don’t try to pawn it, it’s not a real Rolex. I have a supercool little giant pump (1100 gph) that I used less than a week b/c it pushes way more than my custom bulkhead can handle. I had to throttle it way back to keep from sounding like niagra falls and overflowing the display. Even with the valve closed 50% I had too much flow for my bulkheads. I have tried the rob light method and it makes things worse the way i tried it. One large football size piece i moved to the sump and turned it upside down with the zenia on the bottom of the rock and almost zero light, only what leaked from behind the stand. That just made it stretch out and let several stalks go float all over and start new colonies in several places. unfortunately, I have resorted to taking out chunks of rock, scraping with a screwdriver, razor blade & rigid brush. If i don't get every trace of the zenia and the fibrous foot material, it grows right back. I have been throwing it into the flowerbed, it seems to make good fertilizer.

Is there anything that eats zenia? Is there a way to control this stuff? It has decided it wants to take over the tank and spread to everything...

I have shreaded the silicone before so be careful using the single edge razors... The silicone seal is essential to the health of the occupants of the tank as well as the health of the occupants of the house where the tank is located. lol. Sorry, just a bad attempt at some early am humor. But I really did shread the silicone before.

What kind of rock? I am interested but would be more interested in large pieces and especially large fiji. Ohhh now you have my mouth watering... Why do these little things like life and family and holidays and mortgage payments have to get in the way of my hobby? If I didn't have bills and a wedding and three college tuitions to pay for, I would have a killer tank.
