  1. Common sense tells me that the coloration depends on more factors than just light. I am pretty sure the water flow is important as well as alkalinity, Mg concentration et cetera. The problem is to find the optimal conditions for each species. Corals (photosynthetic) need the dinoflagellates, however too many cause the color to become brownish, too little results in bleaching and coral death.

    Thanks for the links.

  2. I am starting a small new reef tank and found a source of live rock. After closer inspection it turned out that the rock is well covered with coralline but unfortunately infested significantly with Aptasis and bubble algae. I checked online discussion on how the get rid of these pests and it looks like this could be quite a challenge. On the other hand some claim that they manage to eradicate both unwanted hitchhikers without a big problems. So my question is; is it wise to buy this rock anyway (the price is right), what would you do reef experts? Please advise.

    Thanks

  3. Thanks guys and gals. I am going to start small, like 28G nano to figure out if i can keep it nice and steady. My impression is that there is more than just pH and hardness.Calcium, phosphates, alkalinity, salinity to name just the basic. I know that it will take some time to get all these parameters balanced. Anyway here is the first question that I have: what is the best substrate/sand or what do you recommend for nano reef? and where can I find it? any LFS or online?

    Thanks
