  1. Would it be OK to set up an 80G DT + 20G sump on the second floor? I am talking about a small two store house built in 2000. It would be nice to have the tank in a room where I spend most of my time but I don't know if the floor is going to hold this much. Any thoughts from people familiar with archtecture, construction or any experience in this matter would be helpful.

  2. By mixing kalk and vinegar you can increase the amount of kalk going into solution. So if simple kalk solution can't keep up with your corals demand you add a little vinegar and by doing that you can dissolve more kalk and increase Ca concentration. This is a risky business since vinegar also serves as a carbon source for bacteria so you have to keep a close eye on the water chemistry. Some people do it with success.

  3. I agree with Patrick that live rock with its “microbiom” is overrated as absolutely necessary to process the nitrogen cycle. I came across a tank build on RC and was very surprised since the guy instead of live rock used plastic rock imitation from China. The tank was also bare bottom; anyway the colorful sticks were growing in this environment like crazy. He was feeding heavily and the only way of crap export was oversized skimmer. It is working for him and proves that live rock is not necessary.

Is this the tank you're talking about?

  5. Bioballs do not produce anythingsmile.png . They serve as a "home" for bacteria. Depending on the environmental conditions (water flow, available nitrogen substrate, light, et cetera) these bacteria may or may not produce nitrate. This are just my thoughts.wacko.png
