  1. I personally do not think you need a skimmer in a nano tank. Most of the stuff a skimmer would be removing can be exported through large water changes and you don't run the risk of stripping the water of valuable nutrients. It is the same reason you don't have to dose chemicals because they are added back during the water changes. IMO
  2. I think blue legs get mean and nasty way to fast. I would recommend black and white or Halloween crabs. I might be wrong, but we had a blue legged crab rip a cleaner shrimp in half. I know for a fact even the smallest blue legged crabs will kill snails(even if there are extra shells in the tank). The scarlet crabs look neat, but they are lazy!
  3. A cheaper way would be to mod the MJ1200s. They would give alot more and indirect flow. There are several threads on RC and Nano-reef.com talking about the different kits and such. Just an idea, even tough I think the streams are sweet and the way to go. The Tunze name just demands top dollar.
  4. Those are some super happy corals. Feeder tentacles are the coolest! Welcome back.
  5. Thanks for the link on reefcentral! i will definitely make both sides accessible on your advise. I was considering only making one side open. I think I am going to do some CAD drawings of my plans. I really want to to have three of the four sides visible.
  6. Does anyone have a room divider tank? I am looking into setting up one and would like to see some examples. If you have pictures I would love to see them. If there is a cool website I should check I would love to see that as well. I think the big issue will be the plumbing. I am right? thank you
  7. Your closed loop adds crazy flow! My understanding is it adds flow without increasing the volume of water through your sump. If the water is flowing through the sump too fast the filtration won't be as effective. In your case it also keeps the pump out of the tank decrease the temp. Why don't you like the closed loop? I think turn to calculate the sump turn over: 1)find the volume of the sump 2)find the volume of water movement of your pump (capacity - head loss) there you have it! the sump can't turn over faster then the return pump.
  8. I have an update! I cut teeth in the thing and got a j-tube. I hooked it up and it works perfectly. I can not wait to build another one in a tank that does not have the space restrictions. Now that I have my feet wet I am considering making a mantis shrimp tank. I just don't know if I want to take care of another tank. James "gluing PVC and acrylic in a small room with no windows can be fun!"
  9. 10 sounds good to me. It does not matter where we meet.
  10. Howdy, You said you like our red macro algae. I was thinking we could could trade you some for your cadi. We would even throw in an Anthillia frag for free. Just drop us a PM.
  11. I agree on taking it slow. I would wait and see how the crabs do. Even if the rock is "cured," the tank still needs to establish itself. Anyway, Greenstar polyps are pretty easy and cool. We have had good luck with leathers and ricordias in our 12G. Anthillia is also easy and fun to watch. Good luck! Can't wait to see it!
  12. I am talking about that show. Man it was cool! Yeah I have seen Ace's reflectors and they are sweet. In a more exciting note the Red Kuda has a new home here in south austin! He also gave us a gulf pipefish! The pipefish has eaten and is doing well. The seahorse is a little shy, but that is typical. We will take pics and keep everyone posted.
  13. Try Mike Stole of Stole Custom Carpentry 512-587-6004. He is a friend and does great work! If he is too busy to get to it, ask him if he knows any one. He knows some of the best carpenters in town. You can tell him James Logan referred you. Did you see the show about the Hawaiian aquarium light only by the sun? I am interested in how your project is going to work. There is a guy on nano-reef.com that has a sun lit fuge.
  14. Did you see the show on the Hawaiian aquarium? That was sweet! All natural coral and lit by the sun. They propagate corals just like hobbyists do. The sting ray tracking was amazing. Sometimes I wish I lived in paradise also. blob7.gif
  15. Check out these pics of the overflow I built for my 12G aquapod. It is made out of 1/8 inch acrylic. This is version 2.0 because I broke 1.0 in half while bending it. This one came out much better and the bulkhead actually fits. I still need to cut the teeth for the intake, but I don't know yet how far down they need to go. LONE STAR BEER AND TABLE SAWS!!!
  16. Is it super close to the light? I have an AC fuge also. My light is on the top. Some of the macro will change color when it is full and close to the light. I thought cheato was pretty good about not going sexual, but I could be wrong. We have had some there types of macro turn sexual, but never cheato.
  17. Addictive? You ain't seen nothin' yet! welcome to the club. Which wall are you going to cut a hole in for your 300 Gallon mixed reef? You will need to decide before next year.
  18. Install the ATO where ever you are losing water. It will not be in the tank. I use the return area. I have built several ATO. I have never done one from a RO unit, but from what I understand a holding tank for good RO is a must. There are a couple of good ATO units out there. Look at the TopDose units on ebay. The are modestly priced and have a cool form factor, but the JBJ and TUNZE ones are cool too.
  19. Have you found anyone yet? I live in south austin, but work up north.(I know fantastic life planning) I could swing by on my lunch break if no one else can help you.
  20. The crew says "Happy Holidays"
  21. Thanks I think I will wait. I just had to ask.
  22. Yes, but they charge $15 a shrimp. I think that's pretty high even for the center yet tiny species of a tank.
  23. I am looking to buy some sexy shrimp. I eventually would like 10-15, but every little one will help. thank you
  24. I think rubbermaid makes plastic pond shells that are pretty cheap, but then after you are done your stuck with a pond. Koi?
