  1. OK, for those that haven't given a specific number desired, I'll assume 1 tube of cyanoacrylate for now. I'll also need a count for the accelerator. Again, this is a 1 oz. bottle and it lasts quite a long time, so I can't imagine anyone needing more than 1 or 2 of them. So the tally thus far is: Mojo - 25 gels, 4 accelerator Austinvines - 3 gels, 1 accelerator hammondegge - 12 gels, 1 accelerator GKarshens - 3 gels, 1 accelerator JoeK - 3 gels, 1 accelerator DHayden - 3 gels, 1 accelerator thedude - 3 gels bcoons - 3 gels, 1 accelerator Naturally the above numbers can change up until the time I place the order, and if you guys/gals want the accelerator, please post your desires. Hopefully all who plan to attend the next meeting will have a chance to eyeball this thread and place an order.
  2. Andrew, can we have a link from this thread to the super glue group buy, so that folks planning to attend this meeting will know about it, and they can get in on the purchase? It already appears that there will be sufficient interest to go ahead and coordinate the dispersement of the glue at the next club meeting. Thanks. Mike
  3. That's awesome! Which model are you using? I looked at the website and mine looks archaic (but still quite functional) compared to the current models.
  4. Hey all, anyone interested in adding a cyanoacrylate (Super Glue gel) group buy along with the next ARC meeting? Marc Levenson (president of DFWMAS and melev on Reef Central) and many members of his club use the generic form of cyano acrylate from Ca-Plus.com for mounting frags. This comes in 20g tubes (as opposed to the tiny 0.5g tubes that Super Glue gel comes in). I called Ca-Plus and a 20g tube would cost only $3.31 each. We can get the accelerator for $1.26 for a 1 oz bottle as well. If we do it as a group buy the shipping through UPS would almost be negligable. We could always delay this for the meeting that will involve a fragging workshop if folks like, but I'd prefer to just go ahead and get it now. If we want to do this for the next meeting I'll have to get a head count. Any takers?
  5. I recently visited my dad in Florida and told him that I got a Dremel tool for fragging corals. He basically laughed at me and showed me what he used to use as a rotary tool. It's made by Foredom and he used it in his operating room to grind down bones; he would gas sterilize the handpiece after each use, of course. At any rate, he bought one for use at home in 1998 but he never used it, so he just gave it to me. There's a foot pedal to control the RPMs, which is very convenient since you don't have to slide your finger up and down the hand piece and you can focus on making the cut. The hand piece attaches to the motor via a flexible cord, and the hand piece itself has a flexible portion as well so range of motion is completely unrestricted. The maximum RPM is listed on the motor at 18,000 (compared to 35,000 on my Dremel) which I would assume is plenty for fragging corals. The only problem with it is that the hand piece only accomodates a 1/16" mandrel, and most of the cutting tools come on 1/8" shafts. I went to the Foredom website (www.foredom.com) and they have hand pieces I can buy that will fit 1/8" tools. I just have to go ahead and order one. This would be great for our club's fragging workshop, which I think is tentatively planned for not the upcoming meeting but perhaps the meeting after that. I should have the new handpiece by that time and I'll be happy to take it to the meeting so that everyone doesn't have to bring their Dremels.
  6. PeeperKeeper (guess you're an opthalmologist or optometrist?), I'm a pediatric surgeon. My new office building will be completed in February and it'll be located directly across from the new Dell Children's Medical Center of Central Texas, which is where I'll work primarily. The tank will be in the reception area and the kids/parents will be able to view 3 sides. It should be spectacular, and I'll definitely update ARC on its progress. Sorry GK for the hijack, just answering the question.
  7. You won't regret it. I got the original ReefKeeper and, of course 2 months later, they came out with the second version, which is clearly superior. I love my RK. The temperature control is outstanding, and the feed mode is a huge time saver. The 2nd version has several other outstanding features, and I can't believe you'd find anything simpler or more reliable for the money. In fact, I'm designing a 450 gallon tank for my office, and I plan on using the RKII for it. No confusing X10 modules to worry about - just plug and play!
  8. Hmm, I haven't gotten any email notifications about updated posts. Oh well, Andrew has enough to worry about. James, that sounds fine, but it's probably more labor intensive than necessary. When John and I made the last batch of grub, we simply poured a thin layer of the mixture into Ziplock freezer bags, and these were placed flat directly into the freezer. When feeding time comes around, all you have to do is break off a small chunk, thaw it in tank water, and you're good to go. Or, if you feed like Clint does, just throw the frozen chunk into the wavebox and watch it fly out for all the critters to enjoy.
  9. So nice to see that it is indeed possible to leave town without stuff dying in the tank - hope I have the same fortune when I go away at the end of the month. Is your skimmer still cranking it out?
  10. I'd vote for early to mid July, any other suggestions?
  11. rprew and hammondegge, what test kits are you guys using? I'm surprised to see the huge difference in Ca results, since you both tested at s.g. 1.025. Aqiadoc, did you ever get a chance to test this? Mike
  12. John, do you store this stuff in the refrigerator? Do you have any concerns for the contents aging and losing potency, that is, do they have an expiration date? As you know, I have a 30g tank also, and since you have enough for a year, I'm wondering if it will degrade in quality.
  13. I'd love to see some maximas come in -- I'm definitely in the market!
  14. Where does the calcium and alkalinity run for the TM Pro, like say at a salinity of 1.026? I just tested my aged Instant Ocean saltwater (not yet added to tank) and the Ca was 350, alk 8.0 dKH, which were both lower than I expected. No wonder I'm adding so much B-Ionic.
  15. A fragging workshop is a great idea. In addition to the "how to frag" discussion, we should go over what tools are needed for fragging (and do a group buy, as suggested) and discuss how to attach them once we get them home. I don't think anyone would want to host this meeting at their private home, especially when the Dremel tool is fired up by all of the guests. Would Austin Aquariums be a good location for this workshop? Mike
  16. I'm with you, JoeK. I'd love to host a meeting, but my 30g cube would probably hold everyone's interest for about 15 seconds. Maybe once my 450g tank is installed into my office next year, I'll have a club meeting at my office?? Great to meet everyone, wonderful hosting, and excellent set-up job Andrew. Looking forward to the next one. Mike
  17. I definitely plan to be there. I've been waiting for a local reef club for a while now (7 months, specifically), and I'm psyched that it's actually come to fruition. Looking forward to meeting everyone. Clint, sounds like the main course is covered, so I'll bring some desert if that's OK. My tank's only been up for 7 months so I don't have a lot to offer in the way of frags, but I do have some green zoos I could bring, if anyone's interested. Mike
