Zarathustra2
Its basically a measurement of how much dissolved oxygen your system has. It is a great "directional" approximation of water quality. The problem is that ORP probes are notoriously unreliable. If you ahve two probes from the same same manufacturer plugged into the same controller in your tank you will get 2 different readings. There is also no real "standard" for where the number should fall in a closed system, or even the ocean. Its very good if you have your system set up very healthy and clean and baseline it there with your ORP probe. Then you can use it as a measurement from that place as to whether your water quality is getting better or worse. It is also absolutely neccisarry in a system running Ozone to make sure you don't kill off everything by overdosing.
+Daniel
In other words, it's not very useful (or practical) for the average hobbyist.
