Chrispar
So after a nudge from a member of my house who shall remain nameless, i added a normal blue colored CFL light( the kind that screw into any normal socket) in a shop reflector:doh:. now ive got this green hair algae that seems to have come from nowhere and is dominating an entire side of my tank. Is the spectrum of light this thing is giving off cause this outbreak to occur?
PeeperKeeper
I don't know as much as some about the spectra produced by any given bulb, but my guess would be yes, especially if the HA started shortly after you introduced the new light. "Real" actinic lights produce the wavelengths they do through the type of gases used inside the bulb, not by a colored filter. Your blue CFL is like a normal fluorescent light shining through a blue filter. It's only the visible blue, not the shorter wavelength light beyond the visible spectrum. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think your blue CFL will make the corals fluoresce (glow) like an actinic does, will it?
barderer
it maayyy be a contributing factor but the REAL root reason is always excess nutrients in your tank. Skim Skim Skim.
