pbnj
Assuming all other factors being identical, which skimmer do you think would provide better performance?: Skimmer #1) Height=26" Body Diameter=14" Skimmer #2) Height=36" Body Diameter=8.5" Edited October 20, 2009 by pbnj
NonSequitur
I could be wrong, but I would think the taller model would give better performance, since the increased height would allow more contact time between air and water.
AlexKilpatrick
There was a movement a few years ago where people were making homemade skimmers 6' tall out of 6" PVC. I even made one myself. I can't say it actually performed better, but it was impressive.
reefman
Plus 1 on the taller model, based on the limited amount of skimmer theory I know. Based on your post, type of skimmer, pumps used, type of pumps, and all that are the same? What type of skimmers are these? reefman
Hey Mike, what size tank is that ER for? I would love to have it, but I'd have to sell all my corals to pay the electric bill Stephen
+Daniel
Generally, as it was found out later, the pressure in a very tall skimmer diminishes the effectiveness of typical venturi-driven pumps. Assuming a strong enough pump, you can make the skimmer as tall as you want. What's important is 1) giving the bubble sufficient "contact time" with the water and 2) diminishing turbulence.
