offroadodge
So i bought a Mag18 for my return pump and for some reason it has a short in it. How do i know? When i put my hand in the sump it shocks me. The pump for protien skimmer and chiller are off so the only other pump is the return. When i unplug it, it (the shock) goes away. What to do? caferacermike
I don't think there is anything you can do a this point except run it externally. The epoxy that encases the motor either came with a crack in it or has heated up at some point and allowed a crack to form. One thing you can do to help the situation is to add a ground probe to the tank itself so that the excess voltage discharges to ground. It might help prevent the shock you feel but I don't think I would continue to run it under water as it could eventually become a fire hazard if it should short and melt down the power wire or short out the electric plug itself.
