dieselndixie
So, back to me looking for a new skimmer....I got some recomendations from people here, and Im not doubting them....but I have a chance to pick up one of these Aqua C Urchins for a good price. here is some specs on them http://www.proteinskimmer.com/productsnew.htm just wondering if this is a good product. I am mad that I went cheap and wasted my money on a seaclone...yet I still cant drop $300 on a nice skimmer thanks all
thedude
Customer service on those skimmers is really great but the technology is a little dated IMO. Beckett skimmers in general use much more electricity and are not nearly as efficient as their needlewheel predecessors. They're also extremely finicky. I'd still just save the money and get an Euroreef, ASM, or other needlewheel driven skimmer.
dieselndixie
well, I figured it was too good to be true. i hear what everyone is sayin about getting a nice euroreef or something..but its just not in the cards right now. I have $150-$200 to spend. back to the drawing board....anything will be better than this seaclown
jian0707
Hi, I just replaced my seaclone with an Urchin a while ago, it does do a much better job. I have a 55g fish only with live rock and very few corals(just getting started). For testing, I tried to run both seaclone and the Urchin at the same time, and the Urchin is able to skim out a lot of stuff while the seaclone picks up almost nothing. It does the job for me so I'm happy with it. Hope it helps.
Dhayden
In that price range Aqua C Remora has been one of the better ones talked about. Although I hear great things of the needle wheel Coral Life Super Skimmer. They have a 65 which is in that price range. Their larger ones get better reviews, but I have heard good of the little ones as well. You can usually find one of the 65's around 90-100$, so for the price they cant be beat. I have a prizm, ughh, dont care for it really.. neither do many of us
caferacermike
I was reading a few posts on another site from 2 folks that returned the Coralife skimmers becuase they wouldn't settle down and produce a nice skimmate. You have $200 or so? Seriously just keep saving up. You really cannot beat a Euroreef. You should be able to find a used one if you ask around. I paid $150 for mine including pump. It was bought and held for a year never used. I link to hotlink http://cgi.ebay.com/Euro-Reef-CS-80-Protei...1QQcmdZViewItem http://cgi.ebay.com/Refurbished-Euro-reef-...1QQcmdZViewItem Act fast it's gone in 40 minutes. http://cgi.ebay.com/ASM-Mini-In-Sump-Prote...1QQcmdZViewItem Not sure of what size you wanted so I took a guess at the under 90g range as you mentioned an Urchin. Hope these help.
thedude
Marine Depot is also running a sale on Euroreef skimmers right now that you might want to check out.
GKarshens
I had the 65 Coralife on my 55 and was happy with it. When I upgraded to the 125 I got the 220 version for $225. I get a lot of nasty skimmate with mine. It takes about a week to break them in and they still have a tendency to wig out every once in awhile and over fill, but for the money I love it. dieselndixie
so what about this....it says its just like a euroreef...can this be good? http://www.aquariumpros.com/p-ASMG1.html
dieselndixie
if I go with a euroreef...is this the right one for a 55g? I think I can get away with 21" height... http://www.petstore.com/ps_viewitem.aspx?i...dproduct=ER1231
dieselndixie
ok sorry....final question on this go to : http://www.petstore.com/ps_searchItem.aspx...&itemsonpage=60 let me know what a few of the good ones are on that site....for a 55g tank. would like to hover around 150-200....maybe more if its really needed. I need to hurry up and decide!!! thanks
hammondegge
i think you would be better off with this one. http://www.petstore.com/ps_ViewItem-Search...-Euro_Reef.html the rs80 is 22" tall and this one is 20" tall. I believe EuroReefs are designed for zero clearance. not positive though check on the operating depth too. i cannot remember how deep we set your sump level but i believe you may have to raise the skimmer a couple of inches. thedude
What used to be called the Euroreef CS 6-2 is by far their best skimmer in my opinion. I believe it's the first skimmer in their like that begns using the Sedra 3000. The skimmer I'm referring to is http://www.petstore.com/ps_ViewItem-Search...-Euro_Reef.html and hsd the perfect sized pump for the body making it the most efficient model. thedude
I'd really consider saving the extra hundred dollars and going with the 135. It also gives you plenty of room to upgrade in the future.
dieselndixie
robert...because the sump sticks out in the back a few inches....the collection cup actually is just about clear of the stand, so height wont be too big a deal unless its over 22" I think anything under that can tilt a bit, and be clear of the stand $288 is not unreasonable....I think I will order that one...gonna have to wait till next week though.
