something to reef on
In my haste to setup my last tank about 6 months ago, I forgot to rinse my oolite sand before adding to the tank. 6 months and some of the super fines have not been filtered/settled out yet. Anyone have a good recomendation for a filter media that will catch these particles?
Robb in Austin
Filters stuffed with filter floss, filter socks on your drain line if your tank is drilled, vacuuming.
Richard L
I bet running a diatom filter for just an hour or two would take care of it. Back when I was struggling with planted freshwater tanks I used one to remove suspended algae and was blown away how quickly they can clear and then "polish" the water. Based on that I would think it would be capable of removed small sand particles but I'm not positive. Btw, diatomaceous earth (filter media) has the same composition of sand so I would also think it is very safe to use in aquaria.
something to reef on
May have to give the diatom filter a shot. I've tried several other medias and there is still a small amount of fines that seem to get through it. Thanks!
