NewtoReef
Hey all. I got a closed loop setup built off this design- http://www.melevsreef.com/closedloop.html I am unsure of what pump style/size i should use. it will be running on a 55g, the melevsreef guy is running a mag5 for his 30g. Is anyone familiar with this setup that can recomend a pump choice for me? Thanks!
Headless_donkey
MAG Pumps have been know to leak when run externally. I have ZERO experience personally running mags externally however. At that same price range you might check out a quietone(flame now I know). I have to suggest an ehiem, but I know they are crazy expensive. You also have the option of hunting around for a used external pump like an Iwaki or panworld. BTW If you get a good deal on a MAG pump give it a try. GKarshens
I used a quietone on that exact same setup for over a year. You have to clean it every 2-3 months but it is silent.
NewtoReef
Thanks for the info guys. i will check out this "quietone". how many gph should the pump be rated for if its running on a 55g? or is it just a matter of how much flow i want? bananags
hey, I ran mag 9.5 on a 30gal tank 24hr/day, no problem the complaint would be : it generates a bit more heat than other more $$$ pump, but work perfectly, maybe a bit louder (humming) that I would like. GKarshens
If you plan on running it through a SCWD I believe the max they can handle is 1200gph.
princer7
I'm running a MAG 7 on my 58 gallon. Plenty of flow although a little on the hummy side. Most overflow boxes are rated @ 650gph for a single U-Tube. With head pressure loss in a sump, it works perfect for my setup - very few bends. I've got (2) Koralia 2 in the tank. I've use MAG pumps both internally and externally with no problems leaking. Edited January 20, 2008 by princer7
