PAR meter

I use a lux meter. There are arguments against it because it's biased to the yellow but you can find one online for about a tenth the cost of a PAR meter. A lux meter will still tell you where the light levels are dropping off in your tank and if you record initial light levels will let you know when the bulbs are getting old and need to be replaced. Here's a good article by Dana Riddle on measuring light and has a conversion table to convert lux to PAR.

yow, that thing is pricey. :)

Yep. I received an unexpected bonus at work, and made my mind up to blow it on the aquarium. I'll share my good fortune with the ARC :)
