mburton
I notice when looking at the big tank forum on RC that a lot of the tank stands are made from steel tubing and skinned in wood. I'm thinking about setting up a new tank (roughly 80 gallons). Are these style stands quite a bit more expensive than just a solid wood stand? I like the idea of using a steel stand and attaching the wood with magnets or something along those lines so I can remove the entire wood skin for full access under the tank. Any thoughts on this? any idea of potential costs for doing this on an 80 gallon tank?
xcreonx
Did you check my tank thread on Reef Central? http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthre...hreadid=1108126 There's photos of my stand that is built exactly like this. I can't comment as far a price since I cut and welded the metal myself. The wood wasn't too pricey and the magnets were cheap. I probably paid $200 total for materials. As I said I built it all myself. Here's one of the photos
mburton
Yours was actually one of the tanks that I really liked this on. Did you have the steel part powder-coated? Does anybody know people in Austin who do this type of thing?

xcreonx
No I didn't powder coat it. Instead I applied two coats of metal primer and three coats of protective enamel. Plenty of protection! Powder coating costs an arm and leg... and since I spent only $40 for the steel I decided against it. The enamel will hold up great.
