Bubble trap.

I also accidentally discovered that the media containers for an old dual biowheel filter fit perfectly side by side in my sumps baffles. Right now I'm running phosguard in one container and carbon in the other. Its super easy to change out media and very effective since all the water in the tank, sump and fuge eventually runs through the baffles.

Very nice tip, I'll have to try it!

The baffles are there to keep the water level stable on one side, like where your skimmer is. If the baffles weren't there you would always have to adjust your skimmer so that it skims properly.

While I understand and agree with your opinion, I really don't see baffles as as an absolute necessity.

Between an ATO and some kind of sponge to prevent bubbles in the display tank, I feel one can do without baffles.

You can definitely do without if you have an auto top off. I find the baffles to be useful. I put a bag of carbon in mine. The bag works as a mechanical filter and it forces the water through the carbon.
