  1. Mike's right about the production rate and need to store water, that's why most drinking water systems come with presurized storage tanks.

These actually come in handy for aquarium use as well, if you have room for them. I have 2 3gal pressurized storage tanks connected to my 24gpd system, which provide plenty of on-demand water for drinking, making coffee, top-offs, etc. For storage of larger volumes I run the DI output into a 5gal bucket with a float valve, which I pour into a brute trash can. This way I can produce 5-10gal of aquarium water in the evening after everyone else goes to bed and still have drinking water in the morning (keeps the rest of the family happy)

In all honesty, I've probably spent more on my water system than I would if I just bought the water at the LFS, but the convenience factor of always having water available (with a little pre-planning, anyway) won out in my case.

Another small benefit of running your own RO: You can capture the concentrate (waste) water from the membrane and use it to water your plants .

  2. I'm headed down to the coast this weekend (Rockport, Port A, Corpus, etc) and remember hearing several people mention catching rock anemones down there. I'd like to bring a few back. Where would the best place to look for them be? Did any of you that went on the trip a couple of weekends ago find any?

  3. +1 on Hydro's suggestions. In my experience if the fish is eating ich rarely kills them, just stresses them until it runs its course and goes dormant. My foxface really likes the green algae with garlic, to the point of sitting by the clip every afternoon when I get home from work, begging.

  4. What if you were to put a piece of furniture on either side of the shelf (a buffet or something similar) to use to house your equipment and support the weight of the tank. Not sure if you could find anything exactly the same height, but it would minimize the modifications you'd have to make to the wall, and might let you use a standard sized tank instead of having to have one custom built.

  5. I go through about 4gal/day on my 55gal with no chiller, but the a/c in my house is undersized, which leads to the air being warm, but dry (80F with 20% or less humidity at 6 pm). My fans turn on with the lights and run for about an hour after they go out at night

I'm surprised to hear of that much evaporation with just two small fans in the hood.. I have two small fans in the hood and one of the largest clip-on fans I could find blowing directly at the water in the sump.

  6. I actually almost bought that clown on Friday.. I bought another one that he had in the same tank, which seems equally confused. The first couple of days I had him home he wouldn't leave the surface at one corner of the tank. Yesterday I added a second little perc, and, while neither seems interested in the anemones, they have at least left the corner. At this point it looks like they're showing more interest in one of my kenya trees than the anemone that is less than 6" away.

  7. I'm actually feeling a lot better, which makes it more of a disappointment. I was concerned about how I would be doing, but i'm healed up and was ready to go, then I found out that they approved the project I'd been trying to get funding for, but they want it done yesterday, so I'll be spending the weekend at my desk. Ugh.

    Oh well, next time.

  8. Do you still have the sand? I'd love to come and get at least a little bit to add to the biodiversity of my system.

  9. I think I had a chromis recently meet this same fate.. whenever I feed the nems they try to steal whatever it is I'm feeding them. A few nights ago after feeding the tank one of them was missing, the anemone was retracted behind its rock, and the squid bits I'd just fed it were floating free in the water (being fought over by the remaining chromises (chromi?) even though they were way too big for their mouths)

Never thought of clowns as trying to pull other live fish into their host nems, though.. makes me rethink the idea of getting clowns.
