  1. I just leaked tested a 55 gal tank Ive had for a long time. It use to run freshwater(rainbow fish) but has remained empty for over two years. Ill take 50 bucks for it or some reasonable trades(frags, live rock) if you got a 40 gal breeder then a staight trade would rock!. Its the standard 55 glass tank that you could buy at any chain pet store. I live in killeen but will be in austin this weekend and could meet you at RCA or something.

  2. Dont think youre even confined by take size. Ive seen people cut through floors into their basements for space for sumps and I myself went through the wall into the garage. While Id love to have 500g of viewing area its just not possible unless I have a house built with it inplace. But adding volume through the use of large sumps or refugiums located away from viewing area is a huge benefit and something to think about as you build your new system. Granted you dont get to house TONS of corals but you get the advanges of the large system without the loss of floor space in the house. It was hard enough to carve out 6' by 2' block for the 180, my wife would kill me if I came home with a 500 gal system and asked for 8' by 4' block.

  3. Its worth it. Granted it does cost the extra $$$ but alot more flexibility. The larger the tank the slowly things change which give you alot of wiggle room when things start down hill BUT if something major happens ie pump leaks or fitting breaks its alot more water on the ground. I flooded my old apartment TWICE in a week from pump issue with my 180. The hundred gals of saltwater on the carpet made me question a big tank but its worth it. I wouldnt ever go bellow 150 for a saltwater tank again!

  4. Its an acrylic tank. The issue with redrilling the bottom section is the stand has a 1/2" sheet the whole tank sits on. So Id have to drill not only the larger hole for the larger bulkhead but a wider hole that would fit the bulkhead fittings. I doubt it would be easy.

  5. As for the setup right now. Two overflows with an outflow and return in each. Its 1" outflows with 1" inflow( reduced to 3/4s for locline) in each overflow. Im going to take a look at that herbie deal. Have to say I am alittle lost on the idea and the physics of it.

  6. The tank is 72" long and I havent seen the "kraken" as my wife calls hime move more than 4" from his cave/lair. It wouldnt shock me if I dropped something in on the other side and they never saw each other. Ill have to see what happens.

  7. Ive got a now fairly large banded coral shrimp and Id like to add some others. He doesnt venture far from his lair and I would bet that another one or even some peppermint shrimp or maybe some skunk cleaner type

would never see each other on opposite ends of the tank. I would just hate to add them and see the fight to the death. Any ideas?

  8. Either way works. Just make sure that if you choose to have a pump run just the chiller to put it in a place where the water its pushing through the chiller is already filtered. The worst thing you could do would be pump unfiltered water into that chiller. It lowers the performance and youll be replacing it sooner than you like. Its a mistake I made in the past.

  9. Yeah. I love that GFIC. The only issue is that it was running too many things. Not amps or anything but the next setup with have the return pump and maybe the skimmer on their own GFCI so that only a failure of themselves would mean a loss of power. It would prevent my issue of a powerhead failure shutdowning the core elements of the tank. Just a lesson I learned from all of this.

  10. And the results are in. It was an submersible pump. The UV and heater both passed. The moment I plugged the pump back in, it popped. I removed the pump and found that the power input that goes into the pump housing was bad and voltage must of been leaking out into the live rock stock tank. Ill see how the night goes and post a pic of the burned out pump in the morning.

Thanks for everyones help. What a way to spend an evening.

  11. I had a electrican come out and install a 20amp circuit direct to the circuit box. Its got a GFCI circuit on the wall plug plus that standard breaker. I had it put there for just running the tank equipment which is all in the garage.

Im not thinking its the GFCI at this point. My money is on the UV piece. Guess Ill find out.
