  1. With a small population of fish breeding together over and over again you start what is called genetic drift. Or what is also called founder effect. While it not a huge deal right away, in the long run for say a company breeding fish for profit, it becomes an issue over time. The biggest problem for a hobbist level breeding program is breeding fish with a genetic defect( negative type).

  2. I had the ability to go through my wall and into the garage which has change my reef keeping forever. I refused to be confined to some tiny little space under my tank along with the physical pain of bending over and get in there to do said work. ( I am in this for the long haul)

But I at least wanted to show some people what GEN 2 looks like. Im still missing afew key parts (ATO, Kalkreactor plumbed in, UV, Frag tank) but for the most part its up and running well.

As this creature takes on a life of its own Ill update as needed.

  3. I had to get abit extreme on a piece of live rock to remove the dozens of glass anemones that had popped up. I wasnt will to play that whole needle deal so I took it up a notch. I filled a bucket with water from the sump and then added some salt so it was in the 1.040 range and abit of buffer so knock the PH up abit to somewhere about 9. I then put the piece of live rock into the bucket for about 3 hours. Afterwards I pulled it out and rinsed it with plenty of RO water and returned it to stock tank for about a day(no lights). Afterwards I put it back in place inside the tank where I noticed the bright red spots. Most of everything was shock killed off to include the puple and green coraline algae so what is this red stuff. The purple and some green are already coming back and the red is becoming more red. Im talking NEON red like at a rave or something.I hope I didnt get into something harmful. Any idea what I could growing?

  4. I traced out a section and cut it with a dry wall saw. Hand type. Interior side first then cut away insulations with sheers. I pushed a section up and some down to give myself a window. Then cut through the garage side from the interior side. So I had a nice hole through but it wasnt perfect. The edges where unclean and over just look like crap. So I bought the electrical boxes( blue ones at lowes) and with those I cut the back of them off. So it became a plastic square frame. I put one in the garage side and one in the interior side and they "mated up" to form a plastic tunnel through the wall. I hope this isnt greek to anyone. If someone wants pictures just give me a shout.

  5. Well I solved the problem. Took some thought but I got it.

The Issue : Making a 1 1/4" hole into a 2" in the same spot.

As most of us know that do our own mods, the drill bit requires a center hole for stability. I tried to put something behind it to drill into and before the hole to drill through. Both of which didnt work.

I ended up taking that two part epoxy from coralife(green stick) and molding that into a brace across the middle of the 1 1/4" hole bisecting it. I kept the epoxy to a minimum knowing that if I kept it in

the line I drew it would all be drilled out. The epoxy brace was abit heavy and started to sag so I add some addition support with q-tips because I couldnt find a toothpick. After about a day I removed the

added support and drilled out the hole. The drill bit cut perfectly into the brace allowing a nice perfect 2" hole to be drilled right where a 1 1/4" hole use to be with none of that ugly grey epoxy around the

    hole.

I just thought Id share this anyone who may run into the same issue. Hope it goes as easy for you as it did for me.
