  1. robert, i think you have been gluing too much acrylic in a non ventalated room! happy2.gif happy2.gif
  2. thanks ed - i have it on a mag 9 right now and it is skimming like crazy with the pump flow resricted a bit.
  3. that is awesome robert! isnt this stuff fun to build?
  4. no needlewheel in this one, the skimmer could be run using a needlewheel pump instead of a regular pump and a beckett injector. where would you get one what?
  5. ok - now testing with a mag9.5 (thanks jose) that is more than enough pump - i have the output of the pump cut back considerably. it would probably work with a mag7. overall height is now down to about 23". this is what it has produced in about 2 hours. i have it skimming a little too wet right now. it is running on the 20 gal fuge of my 29 gal classroom setup.
  6. well, i was testing out a new idea for air injection, so i built a little skimmer. the new idea didnt work, but i converted the little skimmer into a beckett just to see what would happen. what i ended up with was a beckett skimmer that has a 8" X 9" footprint (not counting the drain) and is only 25" tall. probably good for a tank under 100gal. it could also be used with a needle wheel pump instead of a beckett for about the same size tank. looks a little rough, because i just used some scraps, and the water test is with a rio 1100 - nowhere near the pump needed to get the right bubbles from a beckett injector.
  7. try adding an airstone on a pump very high in the tank. if the tank is overloaded (because of the low flow), the airstone will increase dissolvede oxygen and that is supposed to help with pH.
  8. just re-tested, pH in first chamber effluent is 6.8 and second chamber effluent is 7.0 maybe it just had to run a bit longer to start working right :huh i just started it this morning.
  9. well, i got them both up and running, and these are my test results as of this afternoon: tank: pH = 8.3 alk = 9.8 Dkh calc = 560 calcium reactor 1st chamber effluent: pH = 7.0 alk = 28 Dkh calcium reactor 2nd chamber effluent pH = 6.7 alk = 25 Dkh the calcium reactor results seem a little weird - i thought the 1st chamber (circulating) should have a lower pH than the 2nd chamber (static)
  10. another thing you can do is use a UPS (battery backup power supply) for your return pump. that way, if power goes out, your return pump will continue to run for a few hours (depending on pump and UPS size) so you dont have to worry as much about your overflow losing a siphon.
  11. i dont have the most powerfull system, but in a good movie, the walls in the other rooms shake a bit, and i have never seen the fish act differently. in the bathroom not directly next to the room, i even found a small vase that vibrated off of a 4 inch wide shelf and fell to the floor.
  12. christy (my wife) had the same issue, and got that sonicare toothbrush a few years ago when her gums first started to receed. it took a long time, but hers recovered and she loves that toothbrush.
  13. are you sure your test kit is accurate? if i get weird results, i always borrow another test kit or take in a sample to the lfs just to make sure.
  14. yep - robert is your guy in austin. if you were in sa, id be glad to help ya out.
  15. no, i guess i should do that some day.
  16. dont mess with it, bubble tips like to have their foot in a shaded or protected area where they can extend into the light. sounds like it found the perfect place in your tank
  17. you think i will see more growth, even tho i have been dosing B-ionic daily?
  18. well, i finally decided to take the kalk and calcium reactor plunge. built these over the last couple of days, recirculating pump for kalk reactor should be here tomorrow, all i am waiting on now is a float valve for the RO reservoir for it. THANK YOU MATT FOR ALL OF YOUR HELP ON THAT!! all of the expensive stuff for the calcium reactor should be here on monday, so i should be putting both reactors on next week those with experience - would it be better to do them at the same time, or one at a time (a few days apart) any past experience or help is welcome - thanks
  19. yep, im in SA, on the northeast side (about 1 hour from 35 and 183 in Austin) not planning a trip to austin anytime soon, sorry.
