  1. beatifull tank, is it only 55g? it sure does look bigger with that many colorfull corals

Thanks for the kind words everyone. Yes its only a 55 gallon tank. My wife said thats all I am allowed to play with. She knows me well enough to set my limits. I have a few more areas I am looking to fill with some choice corals. Then I may be done. That is until I find something else and have to sell off something to make room. haha

  2. I am thinking of setting up a tank at work and was wondering if it is reasonable to use RO water only? Again the water for set up will NOT be RO/DI!!! Will there an advantage or disadvantage with just using RO for top off water later? Is there a real difference with lab grade RO and the ones used in the home? I dont own any test equipment to see what is in the water, or how good the filters are. I will say that the system has 2 huge cannisters that look like the ones scubadivers carry and that it should be pathogen free. Any information will be of help. Thanks

  3. Looks good! I really like your zoanthids. What type of lights are you using?

For the past 12 months I was using 150W HQI metal halides from Current. I just switched to some 20k spectrum SPS 150W bulbs. I dont run any actinics bulbs because the Current Sunpod light fixture does not have any. I am not handy dandy and dont know how to make an actinic addition to my light set up, but the lights have been more than enough in my opinion. I prefer the whiter 14k but my wife wanted a little bluer look. My rule is to keep her happy.

  4. I cannot remember the names of these things and was wondering if someone can help me refresh my memory for the common names of these softies. I know one bunch that was cut off on the left is Tubbs blue zoas, and the yuma, and the AOG, but the others I cant remember. I think one may be bam bams. If you could point me in the right direction I would appreciate it. All the small colonies grouped together are different zoo morphs. Sorry about the pics as my camera bytes. Thanks a bunch.

  5. I replaced a fan to blow across the top of my tanks water surface and the temps have dropped a lot lower than I expected. I used to run pretty constant between 77-80 degrees before the change. Now the tank sits between 73-76 degrees. It is usually on the lower end for the temps and I am concerned that it is to cold. I dont run a heater yet so I am just wondering if I should for safety. I am just worried because I have had heaters malfunction in the past with other tanks. I am concerned with the winter months around the corner. I had an idea about adding another water pump to generats some heat to offset the cooler temps and provide more flow. Any helpful advice would be great. Thanks in advance.

  6. I have a pretty crappy camera so please try not to be to harsh. Here is a few pics I took while playing with it. Hope you all like them.

The first is the wave action on the top surface of the tank. Do you think I need Vortec because I really want one. Next are some corals and a pic of part of my tank.

  7. I am looking for frags of bright colors to add into my tank. I would like a frag of superman monti with a bright blue base. I have seen some that just dont color up very well no matter the light or flow that is given. I am also looking for some frags of a zoanthid that Mike Delgado had that he called Candy Apple Pinks and also Valentinesday Massacre. Please post a pic of what you have. If possible post a pic of what it looks like under regular lights and also under actinic. I may be interested in other super colorful corals of other types also such as chalices or what ever catches my eye.

  8. I remember you mentioning this at the last meeting. Great information to share with all of us. In my last visit to Moody Gardens a couple years ago there was a couple of small windows allowing a person to see some of the pipes and filtration for the building with the aquatic livestock. This was before all the hurricanes so things may have changed. If I remember right the protein skimmer I saw looked like it was 4ft wide in diameter and about 12ft tall. Of course I may be wrong with my visuals but it definatly looked to be a skimmer. There were lots of pipes. I do remember clearly seeing coral frags on plugs in a couple of holding tanks off to the side of the windows. Makes me wonder if they give frags to fellow reefers. I'll ask next time I am down in that area for a vacation. Nobody hold their breath though.

  9. My wife said she would attend the meeting with me so now I will be there with a wife and two kids. By any chance will anyone there have frags for sale. I figure its my birthday and since the wife holds the money she may let me leave with something nice in my hands if the look and price is right. Please God let her be in a good mood.

  10. Hey you can take the K2 impeller out and switch it with a K3 impeller and it gives off tons of more flow. I have had one modded like this and running for 8 months and it has not had any problems. I only paid 10 bucks for the new impeller.

  11. well i have meet hamp, don ducan, dena, mdavis735, angrycrab?, stoneroller, and maybe one or two others.

Hope you all are enjoying the frags! I still have 2-3 left to trade if anybody out there wants them. I will also trade for some sps if you like.

How about a nice sized colony of pink birdsnest for some of each of the polps? Its all I have at the moment.

  12. Here is a dated pic of my mixed reef 55 gallon tank. The tank is totally differnet looking now as more live rock and corals have been added, plus the removal of the center powerhead and tons of cheato. It has changed quite a bit since this pic was taken, but this old pic will give you a general idea of the old layout. Nothing touches the glass, the LR is pretty much designed as 2 islands with a joining center bridge like area. Consist of modest sized pieces of LR (nothing big) and Cheato growing in the same tank. The current design mainly has the top portion consisting mainly of SPS, the middle being LPS and low areas being whatever. Of course some things are not in those places due to corals liking different flow and light. I use a Tunze Nano skimmer which seems to do fine for me but does take up some room in the tank. I realize I proubly should upgrade, but wife aggro is high and pocketbook thickness is low. I am in the process of setting up a small sump/fuge to help make more room for more corals in the future. This system currently works for me but could be lots better. Hope this helps.

  13. Not much out in Killeen/Temple to choose from for saltwater supplies and livestock. The one place that was strictly marine closed down. The stores in the general area can order things for you if you need them, but stocking of items is limited. Prices tend to be high. Size, cost and demand drives the saltwater sales in the local LFS within Killeen/Temple as in most areas. Not to many marine tanks for supply, demand and cost I am guessing. The few people I have met in the community who keep marine tanks (maybe 10) just drive to Austin or order online. Most either get into the hobby then move or just are never seen or heard from again. I have met a a couple who quit the hobby due to some type of hobby failure/setback. Occasionally I will special order something or just get normal stuff like additivs and food. Just my observations on things in the general area.

  14. Its outside my door. I may or may not be home. You are welcome to it! If you cant remeber where I live give me a call in the AM.

    Thanks
