  1. I agree with Caferacermike, the coil needs to be metal to work best but unfortunately titanium is expensive, aluminum doesn't come in hollowed tubing very easily, and copper is awful for a reef system.

Ric, yes copper is a bad choice. Saltwater corrodes copper quite readily and it will put copper particles into your tank effectively killing all crustacea, including copepods and micro-crustacea, and the fauna of your tank will be heavily affected. Copper is often used for fish treatments so I doubt a little copper would do much harm to a fish but in this setting it would not be good at all.

If all else fails, you might find an aluminum box to put inside the dorm fridge and have it act as a sump/chiller, although your surface area will be far less than if using tubing making this setup much less efficient.

    Just some ideas.

  2. I have about 1 lb, or a good sized handfull, of various snail shells that I've sifted from my sand. It's free to anyone who wants them, they'd make great zoa frag mounts or new hermit crab shells!

I wouldn't argue if you wanted to trade me for a frag but it's not necessary.

  3. I have a 10 lb bag of live sand that I just sifted today. It's all coarse with pieces 1/8" to 1/2" and most likely quite a few baby snails.

It's free if anyone wants it. Of course I wouldn't turn down a frag of something in exchange but it's not necessary.

  4. The turbos I have are relatively small, all smaller than a golfball. They do a great job keeping my hair algae under control!

Let me know through a pm if/when I can trade ya!

    Thanks, Steve

  6. Hey all,

I have these two corals I would like to sell for no other reason other than to focus on getting rics and zoas in my tank before any LPS or SPS.

I'm interested in either trading for rics and zoas or selling them outright.

The acro is about the size of a golfball and it was brown when I bought it and it is starting to turn purple. I don't know what kind it is but under my 150 watt 14k Ushio it has begun to color up in just 3 weeks. The turbinaria is purple with green tinge and it's polyps extend pretty readily. Both are healthy and have been for the past 3 weeks that I have had them!

Prices are negotiable but I'd like to see around $35 for the acro and $20 for the turbinaria. Like I said, trades are preferred and will take priority!

    Thanks all, Steve

  7. Trim and decorative doors are always going to be your big ticket items. Something like that would cost around 200 in raw materials and about 10 hours of labor to complete. I charge $18 an hour so you're looking at a grand total of around $380-400 for stand and canopy combo like that. Often times folks find it cheaper to buy stands from manufacturer's like that since they have the mass-production facilities at their disposal so really fancy pieces like that from an individual like myself are going to be more costly due to labor for just 1 guy whereas the companies can have 3 or 4 guys pump something like that out in an hour or two and spend half the cost.

Let me know if you're still interested in having me build you something. The one good thing about having me do it is I don't charge for design as long as you agree to hire me for construction, so you get EXACTLY what you want no matter what!

  8. Did you use live rock from a previously established tank or were you cycling new rock? It sounds like cyanobacteria and it's a natural cycling process if it's newly cycling rock.

I'd leave it alone and allow it to do it's own cycling if it were my tank. I always leave it and it goes away naturally after a few days to a couple weeks.

  9. I've got a brand new bottle of Aiptasia-X that I use very sparingly since I only have a 16gallon to worry about. If you would like, I'd loan you the bottle and you can use it to get rid of what you've got. It does a really excellent job! Just in case you go the chemical route. =)

  10. How much did you pay for that setup? I'm in the process of building a woodworking shop and when I saw those at Aquatek it went on my list of things to make and sell for some extra cash!

Really neat! Think you might ever change it into a pico lemme know!

  11. Hey all,

Well it's FINALLY complete, I spent all day yesterday setting up my new pump and heater/chiller system and the Mag5 I have to run it all just isn't cutting the mustard. I'm going to need something ALOT more powerful if I want the flow that I'm looking for.

If you have one laying around I'd love to try it out before I buy it if possible because I know these things can get kinda pricey and I'd like to make sure it won't blow all of my connections. Also, I will have a Mag5 for trade when I do find a new pump so if you're looking to downsize then this would be perfect!
