  1. Letting it run for months before adding livestock is always great idea. You're giving the smaller life that came in on your rock (THE reason you bought live rock) a chance to establish and multiply. Copepods, micro fauna, etc all need time without predators to breed. If you add predators too early, there's a good chance your micro fauna populations won't establish. I'd say give it some time to grow.
  2. For your tank I am assuming?
  3. Is it brown algae or green algae? I get phytoplankton growing on my glass pretty regularly. The green stuff is fine, your skimmer may or may not get rid of it. Brown stuff would certainly be taken care of with better water conditions, which a skimmer can help, just like frequent water changes.
  4. It just seems suspect to me that they would create all this hubbub about how bad IO is and how good Red Sea is, etc. without any conclusive evidence. They even say in their presentation that they don't have enough data yet. Now everyone at RC and the other boards are freakin out about their salt and those of us who've used IO for YEARS with no issues are second-guessing ourselves. I just think it's a little irresponsible for someone we all are supposed to listen to and view as a leading figure in the hobby to create this hysteria without conclusive facts to back it up. If it turns out IO is terrible, and the 'proof' is available, I would consider switching. Knowing a little and claiming alot is always trouble.
  5. I've got a similar sponge as well. Beautiful!
  6. No it's just the tank itself. It is a beauty. Oceanic really makes nice tanks.
  7. Oops, i forgot to post a pic. i will get one tonight when i get home!
  8. $100? It's brand new and I paid alot more than that for it. I'd be open to some sort of trade.
  9. Sorry i didn't see your post. Actually all of the seeds are spoken for. If I get some more I will certainly let you know.
  10. Could be species-specific indeed. English lesson time! Interestingly, the English plural of Octopus is actually Octopuses... or you could use the original Greek plural form of Octopodes. Octopi is actually a Latin-plural bastardization of the Greek word Oktopous, and is not correct. confused2.gif blob7.gif happy2.gif <Grad school is a disease....>
  11. Well hopefully someone will take care of it. It's a shame aquarium stores carry such fragile animals and won't educate the buyer on it's care. "Most only live months in the wild" - I haven't heard this before? Do you mean their life-span is only a few months or they die prematurely from predation or other such causes? Seems kinda strange, since it wouldn't reach maturity long enough to procreate if it only lived a few months naturally..... just curious
  12. Should be fine. Water will be clean for sure. I have a Deltec AP600 on my 35g.... now THAT'S overskimming!
  13. Where is Port A? I moved here from SW Florida and we had wonderful collection trips out into the gulf and to the Keys. It would be nice to find a good place within a reasonable distance here!
  14. And I would be interested in seeing the metallic hairy shrooms... love those..
  15. Blue zoas are never turned down happy2.gif
  16. I've tried transplanting them and never had any luck. The good thing with these seeds is that they are ready to plant in whatever substrate you want. They don't really have a preference as seeds, but once they have rooted they are very picky. I'm looking for frags of anything interesting: lps, softy, zoas, etc. No SPS though
  17. I've got a handfull of Red Mangrove seeds for trade. Will trade for small frags. They range in size from 4-5" up to 10". They are ready to be planted. Here's what I've got: I have a bucket-full that I planted last fall. Here's what they look like at a year old: Thanks!
  18. The Xenia will certainly overtake that acro, which has a very weak sting. Try getting underneath the xenia with a flathead screwdriver, taking a small sliver of rock with it. Blunt Xacto knives work well too.
  19. I had one in my early days of reefing as well. It roamed at will, decided to broadcast spawn about a million little white eggs then died behind some rocks effectively nuking my 29g tank. I agree with taking to to a LFS.
  20. I have a brand new 58g Oceanic for sale (36"L x 18"W x 20"H). Still has the stickers on it. No scrathes, never been filled up. It has the Oak trim, and tempered glass on the bottom. No overflow or holes (yet ) $150. I am willing to drive and meet anyone 1/2 way. San Antonio or even Houston. Questions? I'll get a photo tomorrow!
  21. Actually kalk does raise alkalinity as well as calcium, that's what makes it so useful, instead of the 2-part additives. It also has a dramatic effect on ph. I would suggest checking this calculator on the different products and methods: http://jdieck1.home.comcast.net/chemcalc.html
